Worth Moving?

[link to this post]

Heay guys, I am currently on o2 access and am getting on average 440Kbps in the evenings and am abit sick of them saying "Oh we cann fully understand what your going through but its congested and will be fixed" well they have been saying that for 3 months so I managed to get my MAC out of them for FREE and looking around PlusNet seems to be pretty decent enough.

80GB a month is more than enought for me to watch iPlayer and play games and I am within 5 minutes walking distance from my exchange so my speed should be good... would I be wise moving to PlusNet?

(I have till 01/12/09 till my MAC expires).

Cheers!

As it is only a 10 day contract you have nothing to lose as long as you don't take a free router etc.

Re: Worth Moving? - edit x1

[re: deleted] [link to this post]

Unless its changed again the slight downside is that plusnet are now charging their full "setup fee" of £30 even for simple MAC based migrations. So that's £20 more than most if you do change your mind.... Its the flip side of the 10-day contract.

You can defer the fee and get if free if you stay for 12 months, but this was a discussion of suck it and see.

edit: Got the amounts wrong - thanks oldjim.

Thanks Jim - post edited.

I thought I'd mention it as it affected my thoughts as to best choices - If LLU setup is typically £40 then plusnet having the £30 charge even for BTw->BTW makes the "hmm shall I try LLU or plusnet" closer financially, although obviously its only the migrate in and not the migrate out costs...

This is worth looking at before making a final decision.

Cheers for all this.

Yeah the £30 is abit of a pain, but to be honest quite happy to pay that for the luxury of not having a contract.

I checked the link you send me wingco1 and I have no problem with how they shape stuff. I had checked that out before... I mean trying to play L4D on o2 was impossible!

I was considering ADSL 24 but 30GB usage seems quite small to be honest.

I'll no doubt let you know what pans out once it's all done and dusted laugh

I'm just about to go with Plusnet. Like you, I didn't want a contract.

But think of it this way:
£30 and the service is great, and you stay for a year, then you've spent £30.
Sign up for a year, and the service is great, and you've not spent that £30.
Sign up with the intention of a year, and the service is poor, then it only costs you £30 to escape.

The argument I was given was "Why spend the money on something that you might not want to do?!"

The contract is always one month. All that happens with the £30 is it is "deferred". If you stay for 12 months then it gets written off. If you don't then it becomes payable. The only reason to pay for it up front is if there is a risk that you won't be able to afford it later (ie if you spend the money on something else). You could always put the £30 in a savings account and only spend it after the 12 months is up if you don't leave (and in the meantime you can make a couple of pence in interest).

Its an illogical fee to my way of thinking. The ad men not thinking clearly again.

Oops - forgot that... Still, even less reason to pay the charges up front.

Why?

Plusnet need you to stay a year to write off the cost of the setup. They could put you on a 1 year contract with no setup fee, but then everyone moans about the 1 year contract.

This way every ones happy about the 10 day contract and if people need to leave early they reimburse Plusnet the cost of the setup but don't have to buy out the rest of the contract: Plusnet don't have to inflate the monthly fees for everyone to cover the loses made on those who don't stay long enough to cover the setup costs.
