Should i get faster speeds

[link to this post]

Should i get faster speeds?

my line stats are
connection speed is 7616kbps down 448 up
line atten 20db down 6db up
noise 9db down 18db up

just curious as i am very close to an exchange which is 21cn enabled and have good stats
I am a plusnet premium user which states i will get UPTO 20 MEG i have been with plusnet for years now and notice my download speed is always the same at 5.7meg
my modem is a netgear DG834g with the latest firmware
how can i tell if i am connected to the cn21 network is there any easy test

any help would be well appreciated

thanks

The first thing is that you almost certainly have interleaving enabled and this is why your speed is limited to 7616kbps
One way to see if you could be on 21CN is to check if your exchange is enabled - if it isn't - you aren't

OK

Thanks for that info
i have checked and my exchange is 21cn enabled now so you say interleaving
is this on by default as i had no problems with my line speed or drop outs it has been stable for years im only yards from the exchange

how do i go about disabling this and is there a way to check it is on now

thanks in advance

If you go to https://portal.plus.net/my.html?action=myconnection you might find an icon - interleaving - otherwise just raise a ticket
a quick check for interleaving, if your router doesn't give the information, is to run a tracert and if the times are about 35ms to 40ms then you are interleaved but if they are about 20ms or less then you aren't

ok thanks again

just checked there is no links or icons about interleaving

would this normally be set to on as a rule, as my connections have always been perfect

also i am not sure what u mean by running a trace route? as i am not too much into networking

if i ping something like google uk it comes back at 53 ms is this what you mean?

Thanks

Interleaving is on by default and is only taken off by request - usually by internet gamers.
Regarding running tracert if you open a DOS window (in Windows - not Windows 7) click on start then run and type
cmd
then hit return
Then in the window which opens type
tracert bbc.co.uk
then hit return

ok

comes back as 43ms

but would interleaving affect my download speed this much
and are you saying that you cant have fast connections with interleving on

BASICALLY - All I am wondering is would interleaving knock my connection speed down which should be 18-20mb being next to the exchange down to 5.8mb?

My connection speed is rock solid at 5.8mb.

Thanks again

You have misunderstood.
With interleaving enabled the maximum synch speed is 7616kbps but with it removed it would be 8128kbps
Have a read of this http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/interleaving.htm

As oldjim says, removing interleaving will only take you up to 8Mbps.

As you say your theoretical maximum should be around 20Mbps on ADSL2+.

Don't you have to ask Plusnet to upgrade you anyway?

thanks Oldjim
read that to what i could understand so you think my sync speed should go to 8128 with interleave removed but may come at a cost of droped connections

i just thought being next to the exchange and and plusnet premium saying up to 20 meg

will i still be limited to below 8meg even with the noise/att figuers i state above

thanks
