Advice needed on my poor speeds please

[link to this post]

Hi i'm currently on the £19.99 Plusnet Pro package using the bundled Thomson TG585 v7 7.4.4.7.

I moved to a new house last October and brought the package with me, however the performance has been pretty bad. I get about 2600 kbps download and 250kbps upload at present. Pings are not tight in games, ie 250 odd in wow and 120 plus in first person-shooters. Any advice appreciated.

stats below

With that sync rate your ipPropfile should be 3000kbps which explains your speed test results

For starters that is a very poor connection speed for a 39dB attenuation.

If by "new house" you mean a new or recent build, where the builders have installed phone extension wiring, that wiring is very likely to be the problem, and will affect your pings as well.

You first check should be to try plugging the router (using just the short ADSL cable and filter, not a phone extension cable) into the test socket inside the master socket, on the wall at the back in this pic, and read the stats as soon as you connect like that.

That's if you have that sort of socket. If you have a box outside like the one on Page 12 of this link, (if you enter a page number in nn/21, or Page 23 in the bottom right of each page if you scroll down), then the wiring from there to inside may also be suspect, whatever the inside type of socket frown.

If you have an internal socket as per my first link, tell us how many wires come into it even if not connected to anything, and what colours are connected to which terminal numbers on the detached faceplate. (Possibly numbered 2-5 so don't assume the first one is number 1).

Can't believe I didn't pay attention to this before!

Just to give some background the house is a mid 1970's semi, so not a new build.

I thought that we had a master socket in the hallway and from here I had my router plugged in directly and hidden behind a console table, I then use a solwise powerplug to transfer the signal upstairs to my desktop pc. I did this originally as there was no extra telephone points in the house.

I just checked the "mastersocket" in the hall to find its an extension socket attached to a concealed cable, goes under the hall carpet. I've traced the cable to the edge of the hall, upstairs through the first floor into the loft where a cable snakes away to some point near the adjoining neighbours wall. I can't get closer as the loft is deep-filled with insulation.

So it appears I have no BT master socket, and have some old cable arrangement with a 40ft lead. Would BT be able to fit a socket for me?

If you look at this page is your socket anything like the LJ2/1A half way down the page? In particular does it have that capacitor above the internal socket?

If so that is an old style master socket. There are others similar but I can't find pictures easily. That capacitor is the indicator of a master socket, wherever it is. Disconnect (gently) anything on 1, 3, 4, and 6.

Be very careful not to disturb 2 and 5. They do all the work. But check they seem firmly connected.

Edit - typo.

My line attenuation is also 39dB and, on Value, I sync above 7000kbps with 6000kbps profile.
