Unexpected speed increase.

[link to this post]

I am currently on ADSL 2+ with PlusNet and for the past year or so been getting a reliable download speed of about 6500 kbps with an upload speed in the region of 875 kbps
Two days ago I saw the Network Engineering contractors install a new green cabinet near to where the old boxes are sited. This is one of those carrying optic fibre. My Exchange ( Lisburn ) ,according to Samknows will have available FTTC from " April onwards ".
Since the new cabinet has appeared my download speed has gone up to 8200 kbps and u/load to 925 kbps
This morning it had increased even further and the last test showed download at 9407 kbps
I am curious why this has happened and has it anything to do with the new fibre optic installation.

If they have been installing the tie cable between the two cabinets, they may have done something like remake a number of connections, thus improving the lines ability to exploit ADSL2+

e.g. removed a number of poor joints, and you benefited

Yeah, It could just be a case of them improving the connections inside the existing cabinet while installing the new FTTC cabinet.

You are not on FTTC itself as it's not available in Lisburn yet (im on the lisburn exchange myself). And even when it is available, it will not be an automatic upgrade, you will have to order it.

You've probably just benefited indirectly from the new cabinet.

Had the same thing happen to me; I was getting 2200 then suddenly it went up to a stable 2800 and with interleaving on to 3200. Nothing had changed except a new green cabinet at the top of the road. I've never had speeds like that before.

I thought it was due to moving to 21CN but that had not happened yet. Only downside is I was originally going on FTTC on 20th Jan but they had a problem and now it's scheduled for 31st Dec 2010!!!
