Is PlusNet better than TalkTalk?

[link to this post]

I'm getting a bit fed up with TT's attitude, poorish speeds and drop-outs, and I was wondering whether a switch to PlusNet would be a wise move.
I just need the 'standard phone + broadband' nothing special.
Thanks
Mike

Before doing anything can you post your router stats - noise margin, attenuation and speeds.
The reason for that is that a move to Plusnet with bring the dreaded BT IP profile into play and if you have a very long line or line problems it could get worse.
From a general perspective Plusnet will give you better support and is a very good price providing you are on a Market 3 exchange and don't use P2P or Usenet wtc.

Hi
some info from my status page:
line atten: down=32.0db up=14.4db
noise margin: down=9.2db up=8.5db
connection: down=13057kbps up=844kbps
Is this good, average, bad?
I'm less than 1 mile from the exchange as the crow flies.
Thanks
Mike

Very good.
However to get those speeds (or anything like them) your exchange will need to be ADSL2+ enabled and you will need to select either Extra or Pro products not Value
Just to add - if Be/O2 is available at your exchange it might be worth considering moving your phone back to BT and getting broadband from them

OK, it may be that'll stick with TT.
Interestingly when I run speed tests I get between 4200 & 6200 down and between 660 & 700 up.
These figures are markedly different from the figures on the modem status page.
C'est la vie.

What exchange is it? There are a few alternative LLU resellers who are fine. That's if O2 LLU is not available, as they now have a Home Phone service as well.

You can get a LLU service from O2 and/or Be at your exchange

I would think one of the LLU packages from O2 would meet your needs

I would not recommend Plusnet at the present time if you think you may have issues with your line. There have been very, very significant delays in handling tickets/faults, largely I suspect due to a large influx of users due to advertising and keen pricing on Market 3 exchanges. They have been recruiting considerable numbers of new agents, but these are still very green and the Community forums have lots of examples where they have made errors. So while ticket/fault response times are improving they are nowhere near what they used to be.

As Apprentice says - O2 or Be so long as their LLU equipment has spare connections. Put your phone number into this page and make sure it offers Standard/Premium/Pro. If it only offers Access, due to all LLU being taken up, run a mile. That is BT up to 8Mbps and heavily managed and congested. The LLU is fine.

For a comparison of the O2 and Be products see MKD's comparison documents, initially the new colourful one.

You may also be interested in the Home Phone package which is now available.

Whatever you do, do not order through the O2 website or by phone. MKD's docs explain the cashbacks available elsewhere. And if you want the Home Phone, get that separately after organising the broadband.

If O2/Be are not available look at the Pro packages from xilo/uno and www.vivaciti.net. (Same LLU non-O2/Be products, different retail packages).
