This one's aimed more at the plusnet team, but of course any thoughts are welcome!
Would it be feasible for them to offer an option on their control panel whereby the end user could decide whether particular traffic was important to them or not? If "important" then the traffic would benefit from a higher priority on the network, and data transfer would count towards a usage limit.
If "not important", the traffic would use whatever transfer capacity was spare on the network, but would stand the chance of dropping down to a very low (1KB/sec perhaps) level, if the network was at or near capacity.
The idea being that instead of Plusnet deciding what traffic is important, the end user could instead? Suppose they wish to set a large download going at 10pm before turning in for the night, but don't want their actions to impact any other users; they could drop the priority. Equally, windows updates could be set to run at a low priority. Or, perhaps, an important P2P application could see its priority boosted on the will of the user, where they need a download to complete quicker.
I wonder whether this option would be technically possible, and if so whether it'd offer any advantage to any party; be it the end user or plusnet!
...Thoughts?
