Traffic shaping on "Download sites" 24/7 policy?

[link to this post]

Hi,

I recently found that Plusnet throttle connections to download sites such as megaupload and rapidshare during "busy times"

What is everyone's experience of this? I have recently moved to Plusnet and would like to use these sites. I tried last night at about 8.30 and got a terrible d/l speed of about 12kb/sec, which is impactical for anything other than downloading tiny files.

Call me cynical, but I get the feeling that these sites are likely to be traffic managed regardless of the time of day. Is this the case?

Hi there, you can see our expected speeds on this page:

http://www.plus.net/support/broadband/speed_guide/do...

These are package- and time-specific so you'll need to compare the chart to your individual circumstances to see if the speeds you have received are at or below expectations.

Hi,

What is the difference between a download site and download server? You have different speeds listed for each.

Hi dslmatt,

There's a page at http://www.plus.net/support/broadband/speed_guide/do... that shows what sites and servers are in the list, but basically the sites are ones like rapidshare and megaupload and the servers ones along the lines of the university of kent that mirror site content for linux distributions and such.

There's also the distributed content servers like akamai which fall sort of under both categories, but all the details are on the page above anyway.

Hope that helps,

How is "PlusNet Broadband Your Way Option 3" traffic shaped.

When I took this out in 2006 it was your top product, so I presume it has no traffic shaping at all ---- just like your top product today doesn't. Since I'm paying £19.99 per month for this, shouldn't this also have no traffic shaping? Why don't you list all the packages and how you traffic shape things? Alternatively, move people on to the equiv. package and lower their monthly price accordingly. After all your PRO package is £16.49 per month --- I'm paying an extra £42 per year and I'm convinced my traffic is shaped. Can you confirm that it is not?

All the BBYW products were traffic shaped except for BBYW Pro which had a lower usage allowance.
The information is available on the Plusnet Site http://www.plus.net/support/broadband/products/archi...

Ah. Dug out my old stuff and I was on Broadband Premier Option 2 originally, in 2006, at £29.99 pm. I changed in Oct 2007 to the cheaper package as it seemed to be identical - just a sort of re-branding. The traffic shaping is very similar. I have to say I do notice traffic shaping - particularly Usenet. Sometimes it's so slow I just abandon it and use web forums or similar. I know it's not my setup because at other times it's lightning fast. Thanks for pointing that out - appreciated. It's another reason to go to cable I suppose. Virgin's 50mb package doesn't have traffic shaping so I can do what I want, when I want.
