Download speeds dropped, upload speeds normal

[link to this post]

Hi,

In the last couple of days i have noticed that my download speeds have dropped off quite a bit.

Here are my router stats....

Connection Speed 5760 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 27 db 6 db
Noise Margin 15 db 25 db

On the 4 different speed test sites i have tried, i get about 44k upload, but 15k download (twice as fast as dialup, as they keep reminding me)

From looking at my router stats, does this look like a hardware problem? Nothing has changed recently with regards to this setup.

Could there be any explanation as to why my upload speeds are fine, but my download speeds are atricious.

Im using a netgear DG834G router connected through ethernet.

Ive raised a ticket with plusnet, but wondered if there was anythign else i could look at in the meantime.

Regards

Mark

You should run

http://www.speedtester.bt.com/ (you need Java installed, and I turn off anti-virus when I run it also).

And note the IP profile. You can also see your IP profile in PlusNet Control Panel under High Speed Broadband - under Connections (I think).

The fault should be logged via http://faults.plus.net/ otherwise your ticket is really just a question, not an actual fault ticket.

Post all stats, BT results, and what it says in the control panel in to the ticket.

The line can't sync very high because the downstream noise margin has been increased by the DLM from a default of 6dB to 15dB, there is an issue with your line perhaps due to noise which in turn can cause the router to resync as it can't hear the signal from the exchange.

If you have one of the newer BT master sockets, remove the lower face plate and connect to the test socket to see if there is any improvement in the stats.
Disconnecting the ring wire can help as shown in link.

It's best to connect the router by ethernet cable to the PC when taking stats to rule out any possible wireless connection issues.

What data do you get from the BT performance tester?

Here is the data from the BT performance checker

Download speedachieved during the test was - 86 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 50-250 Kbps.
Additional Information:
Your DSL Connection Rate :5632 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 135 Kbps

I'll try connecting to the test socket tomorrow morning.

Many thanks

A line profile of 135kbps means that your line either had a one-off slow connection or has been intermittent. It's more likely the latter so please connect to the test socket (preferably with a different filter), allow 24 hours then raise a ticket including the date + time of starting the test socket check to ask if the connection has been stable since that time.

If it's been stable, the problem is something to do with the internal wiring. If it's not stable then we'll need to raise a fault, you can do this by visiting http://faults.plus.net - please answer as follows:

Question 3: 'Connecting or browsing'
Question 6: 'On'
Question 8: 'My connection keeps dropping'

This will lead you down the path to investigate an intermittent connection as this will be the underlying cause of the problem, not a speed fault.

If the connection remains stable in the test socket then your speed will increase in 24-72 hours.

Hi, i do have a ticket open for this.

35023389

I did change the microfilter on sunday and it does appear that the line has been stable since then (see graph in ticket). Is it now just a case of waiting for the speed to increase?
