Plusnet have apparently fixed their speed tester (the warnings that it isn't working properly have been removed). I'd be interested in comparisons with the speeds people get from other testers when running it.

PN test - 9.8 Mbps down, 0.74 up
BTW test - 8.47 Mbps down, 0.50 up
TBB test - 9.4 Mbps down, 0.5 up
so not a lot of difference.

Big difference on the upload! Presumably that is similar to the results you get from speedtest.net?
It will be interesting to see how it compares for anyone on fibre.

126.3/11.65 It seems spot on and compares almost exactly with speedtest.net and TBB's.
This is hybrid fibre/coax rather than BTs hybrid fibre/copper.

Plusnet have apparently fixed their speed tester (the warnings that it isn't working properly have been removed).
The latter shouldn't be taken as an indication of the former because AFAIK we've done nothing with the speedtest boxes. The message was probably inadvertently removed when the offer was updated.
Having said that the results at the moment do look pretty consistent with other testing tools

This is hybrid fibre/coax rather than BTs hybrid fibre/copper.
Yep, that's is correct. Virgin Media put overhead 133Meg but getting throughput speed of 126Meg but their advert is 120Meg. Well above ofcom up to 120Meg.
BT cannot do 80Meg throughput because of percent of ip profile on the line and depend how far away from cabinet to property line (copper).

TBB: 71.3 13.7

Currently on PlusNet FttC (3-4 weeks post install).
If anything, I've been finding the TBB Upload test slightly out of late compared to other tools and "real world" performance seen.
Would love to tell you my sync speed but haven't yet worked out how to query the BT Router via the Plusnet Thompson thingy.
Am probably about 70-90 meters from our shiny new green cab on Turgis Green exchange in good old rural Bramley. Suffered 10 years of 2meg up / 250k down and now as happy as Larry.

The modem needs to be flashed by asbokid's unlocked firmware. I'm not sure whether a fully tested version is yet available since the Openreach update of theirs.
You can get a very close estimate of your downstream sync by running the BT Performance Test, (ignore the silly entries on the list of things to do first), then at the bottom of the results page click Further diagnostics. In the downstream results box you will see the IP Profile. Divide that by 0.9679.

Got fibre installed two days ago and am getting 43/18 at www.mybroadbandspeed.co.uk but 73/18 at www.speedtest.net. Safe to assume that PN's speed test is not working for me as it should? Exactly the same results over the last two days.

Thanks, I am not at home at the moment but will give it a try in the evening. Just wanted to make sure I knew exactly the speeds I was getting from Plusnet and if they are in line with the estimates, as I initially joined Plusnet on ADSL and for the first few hours after moving to fibre the speed was capped at the ADSL level until I called them and asked to amend my profile settings.
|
|
You do realise they are all the same test, just down to variations in power of server they are running on, and link capacity to that box...
Ookla can be tweaked to show different parameters, i.e. we see some reporting burst results and others averages depending on people have licensed the tester.

This is actually quite interesting, as I also did a TBB speed test and if I remember it correctly I had about 73 Mbps at TBB x1 download area and about 43 Mbps at Burst HTTP x 6 area. The other two also had 73 and 43 but I am not sure which way around.
So would my current speed be based on the info I have provided, 73Mbps? Also, does the burst x 6 speed need to be equal to the x 1 speed? Many thanks.

Just to clarify - are you testing wired or wireless? Wireless is always unreliable, and at FTTC speeds can really mess things.

The speedtest is having the warning put back on as it shouldn't have been removed originally. This test will give incorrect errors if it's used by too many people at once.
