Lease Time

[link to this post]

Anyone know the lease time on a Plusnet IP? Nothing much comes up on a search for the last 6 months.

I'll probably go for a fixed IP when my cashback arrives, but am I destined to keep resetting my DNS every couple of days till then? Sky seemed to be a "reasonable" 6 days.

it normally changes only when it either resyncs or disconnects from Plusnet - there is no lease time per se as far as I am aware

Lease time isn't generally relevant.

Even in DHCP if a device is connected 24x7 the IP address will never change - the lease would get regularly renewed. The lease time in DHCP is so that if there is a disconnect (for a short or long period of time) then it will keep the same IP on reconnection if the lease time hasn't elapsed.

With ISP connection, as you say, if you don't have a disconnection then the IP should stay the same indefinitely but it doesn't use DHCP and I think on every reconnection it has the potential to get a new IP (some ISPs use "sticky" IPs but many just hand out a new IP on reconnection).

Thanks.

I think it resyncs quite a bit early on to get a good/stable connection.

Yep: used to have a sticky IP with Virgin, but Sky renewed every 6 days.

Just wondered if Plusnet did things differently; they usually do. wink

Perhaps I should have asked how often I can expect to be disconnected these days. wink

depends entirely how stable your line is as well as how often there is BT maintenance at your exchange
with fibre it can resync a few times in the first day or so as it normally starts with the fastest it will go with a 6dB noise margin
