After coming to the end of the contract period with John Lewis, I discovered as Plusnet have dropped the surcharge for my exchange it would be cheaper to go directly with them. Went online 2nd Jan to transfer to go live on 16th Jan.
As its effectively an accounting/billing transfer rather than a physical transfer it seems to have left them extremely confused.
Has anyone successfully managed a transfer like this before?

Do you mean the transfer hasnt happened, or just the bills are now a mess?
Plusnets new billing system is known to be screwed up. There are lots of complaints.
My broadband basic info/help site - www.robertos.me.uk. Domains, site and mail hosting - Tsohost.
Connection - Three 4G, tbb tests normally 35-45Mpbs down, 65Mbps off-peak, 9-24 up.

Don't go to PN as they still on billing issues and nothing is resolved yet for four months now ongoing.

My bills are perfect.
The majority of billing issues are for (but not limited to);
older accounts
accounts with legacy products.
I joined in October and every bill has been correct, emailed on time and able to be downloaded from their site.
The same goes for the 2 referrals I've already made. Both have no issues what-so-ever.

+1 for our church's billing

No problems with mine, my friends and my parents accounts.
Obviously its the "forum effect" whereby those with problems post on forums, but those whom don't have any problems are not heard from. Giving a large bias to what could be a small percentage of people.
Not that this isn't awful for those affected.

I stayed with JL after the first 12 month contract ended as it would have been a lot more expensive moving to Plusnet for ADSL1 BB with no free w/e and evening calls as my 20CN exchange is classed as market A so it's not in a PN low cost area.

Same here, my billing is fine but the big plus point for me is the fact that when I need to make contact, I get to speak with someone I can understand. Staff, in my experience are always courteous and helpful.

No billing problems in the six years I've been with PlusNet.

Oh dear, this doesn't sound good as Plusnet screwed up my initial transfer in 2014 and every renewal thereafter! On the Plus side my service has not been affected and my bills/new contracts have been sorted out eventually. Just a pity they seem unable to sort out their billing system as otherwise my service (phone and 40Mb fibre) has been totally reliable and great value.

Yesterday evening came and went, no transfer.
Had initially gone with JL as 20CN market A exchange, but now PN have decided its now in low cost area, so cheaper with them.
After mulling over a bit of the phone call yesterday, think I can see a problem. They talked about confirming an upgrade to the type of BB I had. I currently only have ADSLmax available, the exchange upgrade for ADSL2+ has been in a months time for the last eighteen months. When looking around for prices, another ISP said the exchange was due to be upgraded this february, so wondering if they are trying to get the ADSL2+ change made before its available.

It's only taken since October, but I think Plusnet have now got my billing right.

I changed from a residential to a business account last October. They messed that up. Charged or the residential account after it was closed, can't provide a receipt for the business account initial payment, and can't bill me for the business account. I had to go to the ombudsman about not being able to get a refund for the residential account, and Plusnet offered £50 compensation. I accepted that but it has never been paid, so I'll have to go back to the ombudsman. The support staff try hard, but they are helpless to resolve billing issues.
