Plusnet FTTH

[link to this post]

Openreach have confirmed I can get FTTH now.

A week or so ago I spoke to Plusnet who said they'd release me from contract to go to BT but at that point systems were not fully updated, my post code could get FTTH but not my number.

I rang again yesterday with the same question, but now, in a weeks time I was told, Plusnet would have their own FTTH, the chap was just getting training on processes and prices etc, although it was a bit confusing as asked me how good the current service was, number of devices what I used the conx for etc.

To be honest the current FTTC is very good and serves 5 of us for WFH , Netflix gaming etc but a Fibre conx with better pings is appealing, faster dl is good too.

Anybody else have any info on Plusnets intentions ?, BT prices seem a bit rich so if Plusnet is a tenner below thats good

This will be of interest to many people, I knew Plusnet were planning on selling FTTP but by what you've been told it should be available very very soon smile

Out of interest, will Plusnet release you to go to EE as well ?

I wonder if this is all BT Group's plan to wind Plusnet down, (eventually to nothing of course, as everyone will end up on FTTP !)

Wasn't mentioned, but EE don't seem to do phone numbers so that rules it out for me.... smile

Be very very surprised Max, Plusnet have released their Full Fibre Service today, but it doesn't show up on the website yet unless you look at the detailed prices in the legal stuff. It can only be ordered over the phone.

Full Fibre 36 - £27, Full Fibre 74 - £30, Full Fibre 145 - £35, Full Fibre 300 - £40, Full Fibre 500 - £47, Full Fibre 900 - £55. Compatible line required.

On the forum JonoH says " for now it will be offered to customers calling in to renew contracts if FTTP is available to them."

Seems like a pretty low key product launch to me.

Yes indeed. And until someone starts selling a low-cost FTTP 40/10 option with voice, people are going to stick with copper.

Which reminds me: does the Plusnet FTTP come with voice, i.e. are they using the voice port in their new hub?

If they are, I wonder if they are just relabelling BT FTTP and selling it under the Plusnet brand?

according to ISPreview those prices are post-contract prices (i.e. month 13 on a 12 month contract) so in-contract pricing should be lower you'd think

Currently Plusnet "80/20" FTTC

I think those prices are out of contract so some discount should be available for new and re-contracting customers. Only way to find out is call up and haggle.smile

It also seems that it is Broadband only with no phone service (similar to EE)

Given you can get FTTC 74Mbps from Plusnet for £25, I would imagine the 'discounted' prices when offered will be £5 less per month than the out of contract price.

Why Compatible line required? No need for that for Full Fibre Optic

What Dect said. I'm not a Plusnet customer and don't plan to be. My ISP is pretty small.

Should be good pricing for value-conscious people for whom Openreach is their only full-fibre option for sure.

Full Fibre 36 - £??.?? then £27.00

Full Fibre 74 - £??.?? then £30.00

Full Fibre 145 – £33.99 then £35.00

Full Fibre 300 – £37.99 then £40.00

Full Fibre 500 – £41.99 then £47.00

Full Fibre 900 – £51.99 then £55.00

Looking at the difference of the Full Fibre 145 in and out of contract prices (£1.01 extra when out of contract) I can't see the price of Full Fibre 36 or 74 being much cheaper than the out of contract price shown above.

Looks like theres another issue:
If you are with Plusnet and you want to upgrade to FTTP then you will lose your landline number ( as Plusnet will not provide FTTP customers with a landline)
and for those who use plusnet email addresses , if you move to another provider then you loose your email addresses / access to plusnet email as plusnet have stopped providing email only accounts

People need to wean themselves off bundled email as it always ends in tears when you move provider. Interestingly you asked a question about leaving plusnet and how long email would stay active way back in 2012.

The way to handle the landline would be to order the FTTP as a new/separate service (rather than an upgrade / migration from the existing FTTC based service). Once the FTTP service was successfully up and running, then and only then initiate a number porting request with a third-party VoIP provider. This has the effect as we know of ceasing the copper.

Importantly the landline number is retained (and can be utilised on ANY internet service anywhere) AND there is no drop or disruption to broadband. The (small) downside is a limited period of dual running both FTTP and copper services.

In some ways voice should now be treated as a portable asset able to be migrated at will independently of the broadband provider one uses. Makes life much easier to move at will.

As you’ve opened another Plusnet account, this ought to retain your email etc - but note the advice above from dect.

Thats some digging smile to bring things up to date, since 2012 i had managed to get a good deal on renewals with plusnet, and only recently did plusnet not seem bothered to retain me, so i moved to Now.
Ive been slowly weaning myself off plusnet email, however there are a few contacts that still get in touch with me via the plusnet email despite best efforts to get them to change address.

When i left i managed to change my plus net account to email only - just before they stopped email only accounts

The loss of landline / number would be a much much bigger issue for me than email

Could you put an out of office on the Plusnet account saying your email address has changed and state what the new one is?

My guess is that Plusnet will offer a 'digital voice' product to accompany their FTTH service, but it's not ready to launch just quite yet - bearing in mind that Plusnet FTTH is very much a soft-launch.

I've bitten the bullet and will be transferring to BT Fibre 100 (150 down 30 up) 24th June, wanted to keep my number. Was offered 15th but can't do that.

£35.99 +£7.50 700 minutes. So about £8 pcm more than Plusnet 80/20, inc all calls

Didn't quite see the need for max speed at the moment , big jump from Pipex 20 years ago ? or so £50 pcm then ? for 0.5 Mb speed, which sensational compared to the 56k modem before that smile

They don't currently offer VOIP but the new Plusnet Hub 2 is a rebranded BT Smart hub 2, with an ATA / VOIP port and DECT built in.

I'd be surprised with their choice of new Hub if they didn't launch a Digital Voice product.

Prices include VAT ? Extra for VoIP ? Porting charge ? Contract term ? Installation charge ?

If these are unknown factors you can't determine if it's cheaper elsewhere.
