(Free) Firewall & A/V to use with Vista 64 bit?

[link to this post]

My new PC is 64 bit so I have put 64 bit Vista on it but now looking for a good firewall and A/V to use.

I have been using ZA and AVG on XP Pro but ZA is only available as a 64 bit beta and seems to allow open access to all and sundry so I have canned that. AVG8 seems to crash (BSOD) the PC, is it because I have left Defender running?

Currently trying Comodo but is seems to be opaque when showing you what and how it is controlling access and I do not like the lack of control I am used to with ZA / AVG.

Anyone got any other suggestions for 64 bit solutions?

Hi, I use (Free) Avast with (Free) Avira AntiVir Antivirus, both Avast and Avira are Windows x64 bit compatible.
I also use (Free) ZoneAlarm I would not be without it, shame it not being x64 bit ready.

I recommend Kaspersky antivirus which works perfectly on Vista 64 (using it myself). It's light on resources, has daily updates, excellent detection rates, good support on their forums and cheap. I got a 3 user licence for £10.34 from OcUK.

Or the 1 user license is just £8.04.

If you're looking for a free antivirus then I recommend Avira AntiVir, however it does have an annoying popup screen and the updates are slower on the free version.

As for a firewall. I personally just use my router firewall which blocks all incoming nasties and the Vista firewall for a little extra protection. I used Comodo but thought it had become quite bloated. Infact most firewalls these days seem to be bloated and full of "features" that I'll never use. I loved Sygate firewall before but that was discontinued ages ago.
Another firewall I liked when on XP was Online Armor (free version). It's worth looking into, not sure if it works on Vista though.

Thanks for the suggestions. Took Comodo off as it really is far too secretive and to cap it all updates had stopped working. For the time being have put AVG 8 back on (better the devil you know) and so far it has not crashed so I am beginning to think it was a problem with running it alongside the dodgy ZA 64 bit beta.

So, all I need now is a (free) firewall that gives me the same level of micro-management as I am used to with ZA and I will be happy. Relying on the Windows firewall behind a NAT'ed router does not somehow give me the level of confidence I would like.
