I did try Kaspersky AV a while ago (on my second PC) but ditched it as it insisted that I uninstall SpyBot which I've been using for years with no problems!

to be fair, as much as kaspersky is slightly bloated (imho), spybot is as good as a chocolate fireguard for the most part.

It depends what you need to "rely" on it for, I really do not think you need active/real-time antispyware, you only need to run it when you actually get it, if it's hidden in the background, it's not spyware.

Spybot just cant keep up with modern spyware antics, all it does now is seem to detect spyware cookies. If you get any AV2009 variants, spybot will certainly not be able to deal with it.

You should give sunbelt vipre a try, afaik it is the only AV product which actually combines true antispyware and antivirus in the same engine (not just lopped on the side). It deals with every peice of malware, so eliminates the need for seperate programs. The antispyware it was built on is probably the best on the market too, it is not just some added definitions or feature sets which some of the other AV companies have done (on par with superantispyware). It also can remove them properly too.

If you do not trust sunbelt vipre as your AV solution, and still feel you need a good AV, look into it's antispyware solution as a standalone (it has the same engine as it's AV except doesen't recieve virus definitions - you will need to disable its active protection if you are running it alongside NOD32 though - but thats no problem).

Oh, and it's also *the* most lightweight on resources!

Poor Kaspersky.... never mind, I ditched them after 6mths. Fed up with blotware, incompatablility with PSE5 and moderators on the forum who were none to helpful, that might explain why the Hacker didn't get a response on the forums!

Most security software companies annoy me tbh, always fobbing you off with excuses or FUD marketing. Sunbelt is an exception to that though, I can't rate their products or support highly enough. Support will put you through to the developers of the part of the software you are having trouble with, if needs be!

I find Kaspersky is a bit bloated in the fact, and I know this is petty, but on the XP login screen, a little kaspersky icon is put in the corner, the GUI is also a bit of a whingebag with its high baloon popups, they also seem to be swaying more towards FUD marketing than they previously did. iirc there was another reason I had, but it's late and I have forgotten what it was which niggled me last time I encountered it

I think, in hindsight, bloated might be the wrong word in a way. The product also seems to use more resources than the previous versions, iirc (imho), v4 was good, but when they released v5, the program started to impact performance more than it used to. The reason for this is probably due to all the bolted on functionality offered by it.

I said this a few months ago (and some asked me to provide proof which I don't have on hand) but I have seen posts of quite a few people fall out with Kaspersky because of its more heavy resource usage in the later versions.

Aside from that though, compared to the likes of Norton and McAfee, good luck to them.

Eset do packages which include firewalls too.
