contracted some trojan horse

I do make a reasonable effort to be safe on the computer. Run software and router firewall, run an up to date version of AVG and firefox when browsing. Furthermore I never open dodgy exes for which I cannot trust the source. However I appear to have picked up a 'trojan horse' which has me mythed.

Details from AVG (written out as I can't seem to paste them)

Virus Name: trojan horse Downloader.Generic8.AHTY Path to file C:\System Volume Information\_restore{60A (big long file and path name that ultimately ends in) \A0063996.exe

Virus by same name also found in C:\Documents and Settings\Mark\Application Data\pidle\pidle.exe

I want to know, where I got this from, since I thought I was reasonably well protected. And how I can ensure this stubborn pest is gone for ever, since it seems to keep coming back, despite healing or whatever else in AVG. How can I protect myself in the future since it is evident that my current setup is insufficient.

Download, install, update and run Trojan Remover in Safe Mode.
Then dump AVG and use a decent anti malware solution.
