ESET Smart Security

[link to this post]

Hi smile

Just got this today after upgrading to KIS which slowed my PC to a crawl making it unusable.

Anyway, long story short, is there a facility (which I can't find - but I could be blind) where I can schedule a scan (I've done that) and after the scan it turns the PC off?

I used to schedule a scan every monday with KIS leave it to run and let it close PC after the scan. Is there such a thing with ESET?

TIA
Helan

Why did KIS make your machine unuseable? I've installed this on probably a hundred machines that have varying user needs and power and not one has seen any more of a slowdown than expected when an AV is installed.

I really dont know and neither did KAV forums so after trying to find a solution for 6 days to no avail I gave up and bought ESET. If I didn't need this PC for work I may have struggled a little bit longer but as I said, it made the PC inoperable, not just browsing, that was the least of my worries, opening any kind of prog/document doing anything.

I tried several online scans for viruses all came back clear, I cleaned the registry, used various tools recommended by KAV forums but nothing helped so I had no choice but to give up and buy ESET as I was losing work.

since uninstalling KIS and installing ESET, I dont have that problem and the PC is back to normal so it obviously isn't/wasn't a virus, more like a conflict with some kind of prog I have on the PC or something?

As I said I dont know smile

FYI I've been using Kaspersky since Nov 2005 so I've hardly "just started using Kaspersky"
others may well do but they might not have the conflict that I had so it's a moot point imho and certainly does not help me.

I had lots of problems with "Kaspersky ndis filter", still running Kaspersky Anti-virus on this machine and speed not an issue with that part disabled.

might renew it but not sure - might just take the Nod32 licence from old machine

If you want to go on about how good KAS is for you and perhaps others, can you pls start your own thread? I am asking a question that has nothing whatsoever to do with your posts and you keep derailing my thread mad

Dont know what went wrong with it tbh but neither did anyone in the KAV forums so I had to give up as mentioned earlier.

Well, so far I haven't had any problems with ESET, it's fairly easy to set up and fairly easy to use and it does what it says on the tin so that's what counts for me smile

When you going out taking more pics?

Did you try re-installing KIS after uninstalling it?

I did have one machine a while ago (with an older version of KIS as well I might add) that had a similar problem, turned out some files were corrupted so an uninstall/re-install fixed it.

I went through several loops uninstalling, reinstalling, cleaning registry, posting my system spec on KAV forums etc, nobody on the forums could work out what was wrong either, nothing would fix the problem which is why I think the problem was remote to me/this pc and a conflict with some type of prog or some type of corruption on install, something like that?

Hi Helan, you probably have figured all this by now, detailed instructions for ESET AV version 4. Creating a scheduled scan.

IIRC correctly, we've chatted before and I thought then that you were happy with Kaspersky which is why I asked. Sorry to hear about your problems with it and good luck with NOD. It's performance is about equal to that of KAV so you'll be OK once you've got the hang of it's interface.

The loading on the CPU of ESET is much lower than Kaspersky, because of the way that the program is written, and the impact that this will have on any computer will really depend on the speed of the CPU in that particular computer.

I was actually referring to it's malware detection etc capabilities but out of interest, I currently have an old P4 1Gig XP laptop with 256K of memory and XP Pro installed which I use for testing broadband installations. I have KIS 2010 installed on it and although there is a performance impact, it is still very useable.

I have had Nod32 for some time as AV on laptop (and couple of others PCs) - no hassles and seems pretty good (it's caught a few viruses before they were on lists - not that I'd have run the exe anyway). I like to try keeping different anti-viruses on desktop to main machine - as an extra layer of security

I haven't been able to get as close to the wildlife River is busier (than where I was living), so not getting as many shots - went to a large RSPB reserve Sunday - but it was very quiet frown (Probably go back in Autumn)

if weather's good Sunday might try elsewhere

Yes I worked it out now thanks very much. The facility I was looking for i.e. to turn pc off once scan has completed isn't available unfortunatley. Not to worry smile

Thank you for the links and your help, very much appreciated smile

Yes we've chatted before, you helped me when my step son got a virus on the laptop about a year or so ago now smile

I am/was happy with KAV, I still use it on the laptop, just for some weird reason (as mentioned above) I couldn't get it to work on this PC after an upgrade but to be fair, I didn't have the time to go into detail and try and find the problem.

Wise decision smile I still use KAV on the lappie, does what it says on the tin smile

Its quiet here for wildlife at the moment, not sure why except maybe the moulting stage is still ongoing so they are in hiding until that's finished?

if weather's good Sunday might try elsewhere

Hi smile

It seems that the task I was looking to do is not possible with ESET, no major drama can turn PC off manually after a scan smile

I'd just like to say thank you to everyone who posted and helped, much appreciated smile
