Help, opera keeps giving my email away.

[link to this post]

While browsing the net. I'll randomly get emails from websites i've recently visited informing me i've signed upto there mailing list. I'm not signing up for anything? Opera seems to be giving my email address and somehow auto signing up to everything it sees??

How do i stop this? Other than switching to firefox which i could do. Opera has only recently started doing this within the last 2 or 3 days ran it for years before and never had it happen.

I cleared all the personal data from opera. And reset its preferences to default. I think with any luck it might have solved it. Also this has given me a little scare that my pc might have had a virus. I don't like my current anti virus. (nortan) Is AVG anti virus anygood?

I want it to be good for protecting against virus's and trojans of coarse. Spyware too. But also it would need to be low on system resources ram and cpu etc. I would prefere if it was free hence why AVG has got me interested. But if a certain Anti virus product was really good and low on resources i may be willing to pay.

I have been using the free edition of AVG for 3 years now and it all seems great to me, go for it and remember to keep it updated often!

If you do get probs with your pc catch a virus etc etc I would suggest you set yourself an account with http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/
Those guys are really helpful and will guide you through your problem.

It's often worth looking in their forums for info even if you are not registered as a user.

Have fun

Doubt whether it is your browser doing it; Opera or otherwise. Anyway, would it know your email addy? Mine doesn't.

More likely it is somewhere you did sign up to in the past (try emusic.com for me frown), or one of your correspondents has deliberately or inadvertently given your email addy away.

AVG free has no heuristic protection. Only virus updates, and a virus can exist "in the wild" for several weeks before it appears on a virus list.

I love it when people say "I've been using XXX for X years now, and all seems fine to me". People seem to have the wrong idea about viruses - they are not written to cause havoc and destruction to your PC. Most of them are written to silently steal your data by logging what you type, and sending it out silently while you are connected, or to generate spam, which is also sent out quite unobtrusively. The users of this malware don't want you to find it, so how are you ever going to know it's there ?

I solved the issue btw. It was not a virus or trojan. It was infact someone giving my email address away to loads of websites on purpose to annoy me. Proof of that came when one of my friends told me the person doing it had been laughing about it to him on msn. Gloating about how he had got me scared that my email add was being leaked. Altho i do have another weird problem but i should make a new post for that.
