I've just installed MSE and see that it says that it updates virus & spyware definitions automatically. How often does it do it and how do you know if it has or not?
I'm aware that you'll eventually get a warning if it hasn't & you have to do a manual update. I had AVG Free before & you could set a time for the update process.

Look on the Update tab, it'll tell you when the last definition file was created. It seems to update once a day in my experience.

yea m8 can update a couple of times a day.......if you go into options you can set when you want the application to scan your system..
you can set it for daily scanning or weekly scanning....when the scan starts it will apply and updates that are available

Mine updated this morning........
What definitions version is it now showing?
It says:-
Definition version: 1.79.495.0 created Today at 10:00
Mine says :
Definition verson 1.79.430.0 created 24/03/2010 at 07:05
I'll give it another day and if it doesn't update will have to do a manual update.
Looking on the MSE Community forum there seems to be a number of problems with the update process dating back to its release but I haven't managed to find a definite fix!

Hmm - strange. I have defender on three laptops and two desktops (running a mix of Vista and XP) and have never had an issue where it didn't update automatically.
I'd tend to uninstall it, clear out the registry using something like Glary Utilities ( http://www.glaryutilities.com/ ), then reinstall it from here:-
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/...
It wouldn't take long and may overcome the issue for you permanently?
Edit - Link for Glary Utilities

You can look at the System Event Log - via Administrative Tools. In there are entries for Microsoft Antimalware. There are different types:
1000 - start of scan ???
1001 - end of scan ???
1013 - update - no new definitions???
1015 - update - new definitions???
2000 - ???
At the moment I can't find a definition of the various event log entries MSE uses.
