Unable to install security update KB974417

I have been trying for months to install this .NET framework security update without success. I see from the internet that I am not alone and am asking if anyone here has any answers.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in hope!

Download the relevant file from Microsoft.
Extract it to a folder using the "-x" switch.
Navigate to the folder and run the *.MSP file that's present.
Reboot.

Now run Windows Update.

I'm afraid I got nowhere. The Geek Lab link you gave suggested running <font color="#33CC00">NDP20SP2-KB974417-x86.exe -X</font> then doing various other things. However, when I ran the command. Windows told me it could locate no such file.

I tried a few times but no go and things are worse now in that I cannot install two other updates downloaded today - [color=#33CC00]KB979909[/color] and [color=#33CC00]KB982168[/color], both for the .NET framework. I have the feeling that something is fundamentally wrong with my .NET installation and I wonder if it would be possible to remove it and replace with an up to date version?

Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm out of my depth here.

Sorry about that.... The link should have pointed here. I was going to be lazy and just point you to the article but decided against it..... And then promptly posted the wrong URL.
Assuming a 32 bit system, click the third link (NDP20SP2-KB974417-x86.exe) and select "Run" when the download box opens (You can save it and run it later if you like.

You can if you wish uninstall/reinstall DotNet but it would be advisable to use the DotNet removal tool; also available from Microsoft via MSDN.

It might also be wise to download the required DotNet installers before uninstalling the existing. Also, imaging the system using free software such as Macrium Reflect before starting would be a very good idea. That way, you'll get all the shots you need to get it right.

I'm unable to install both (KB979909)Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 and .NET Framework 2.0 SP2 Security Update for Windows 2000, Windows Server 2003, and Windows XP x86

They are downloaded via win updates, and appear to install ok,even ms update history thinks the install was a success, but they are not installed, ?

It's the same problem as above with basically the same fix for each update. If I were a betting man I would wager a few bob that these updates are in fact installed, but WU has it's knickers in a knot and the computer says no.

I'm also unable to install sp3 for win xp it get's so far into the install process then says it cannot find a file, didn't show a file name, stops and then i have to ok it to reverse the changes made, this too fails to complete,or so it tells me, same cannot find ... ???,

I remember having numerous .net issues in the days I used to run XP. Thankfully these bugs seem to be ironed out in windows seven.

To fix I did what I believe deadbeat is saying.

downloaded the standalone installer seperate outside of windows update and then running it.
