Removing Registry Entries

My system loaded this morning with a warning that it could not find an executable file in one of my temporary folders. I would guess that some malware has been at work and has created an entry in the Registry. Can anyone recommend a piece of software that would clean the Registry and/or allow me to remove this entry?

For years.

It's 100% free, clean and nice. Be sure to get the version that suits you. One version has added languages and a couple of them have yahoo or google (I forget) toolbars included. The 'Lite' version is toolbar-free.

A small caveat to what Cami says is to carefully go through the options before running it and select exactly what you do and don't want cleaned. It won't do any harm if run in it's default state but if you don't set it up to your needs, you may lose wanted cookies, autocomplete entries and website logon passwords etc.

Thanks Cami - just wanted to know that you've used it successfully.
Some posters on these forums try to help by recommending software that they haven't used. This, obviously does not apply to you !!

CCleaner is the best option....

i would also recommend http://www.wisecleaner.com/wiseregistrycleanerfree.html as a second option..

i found it quite usefull when trying to remove some stubborn entries that CCleaner could not detect/remove...

Hi, with CCleaner I use RegSeeker, an old programme now but very effective, with registry files backup.

I use the old RegCleaner, but tend not to recommend it, as it's older. There's nothing wrong with it, but I don't fancy someone with WIndows 7 trying it then moaning at me about it not working.

I use ccleaner, which ain't too bad, but i prefer PC tools registry mechanic, which does a more in-depth scan & clean of orphaned reg entries and also will create a system restore point before it cleans if you wish,
But before editing your registry manually or using software always make sure you have a backup so any changes made can be reversed should something screw up, at least then there is a chance of repair without a repair install or re-install of your o/s and programs

Wouldn't fancy re-installing an operating system these days !!
It used to be the case that reformatting the hard disk and reloading the operating system would clear all the problems.

Sensible use of Ghost or Acronis TI or their free alternatives such as Easeus ToDo etc should really eliminate the need to reinstall.

I've seen both RegSeeker and RegCleaner bring systems to their knees. I too would not recommend their general use. CCleaner strikes the right balance between effectiveness and safety.
