I've been running Kaspersky Internet Security for two years quite contentedly and have no desire to change.
The company now tells me that I need to renew my licence. Fair enough.
I had proposed to buy new, as Amazon offers it cheaper than the update - except that several posters on Amazon report that KIS 2011 has 'issues'.
My query is, please - if I use the 2011 key just to continue using my existing app, i.e.I don't actually install 2011, what will be the practical and/or perceived difference against the new version?

Which version are you using, if it is KIS2009 it is no longer supported by Kaspersky although they are still issuing updates to the AV until December this year.
TBH I had problems on my desktop running XP when I installed KIS2010, it slowed the computer down and web pages took ages to download so I went back to KIS2009 which I have no problems with, because of that I have not tried KIS2011 on the desktop.
However the laptop running Vista with KIS2010 and now updated to KIS2011 has not had issues or problems.

I used to have a handle on life, but it broke.

I've had no problems with Kaspershy 2011. Running fine on 2 64bit machines & a laptop.
If you buy the CD, just use the key & download the latest KIS .exe file online.

No issues here either with 2011 on x64 Win7.
The best course of action would probably be to run the trial of 2011 for a month on your own system[s] to see for yourself what's what.

Thanks guys.
My current version is 2010, because I loaded it in its entirety a year ago. I run it under vista (I know, I know, silly me!). Yes, it does take a long time on fire up but I can live with that.

Like yourself I buy from Argos or PCW, much cheaper than KIS 'easy renewal'. I've had no problems with one computer on W7 and two on XP (I got a 3-user for less than KIS 1 online).
If you do hit snags the KIS forum is excellent and worth a read for background alone.

Cheaper still!

The only problem that I have with the 2011 releases is the inability to easily customise the installation. Although it's easy enough to do using switches with the installer, Kaspersky's flat refusal to reinstate the custom option along with the advent of "Pure" leaves me thinking that before long, it will be just another McAfee or Norton or whatever.
Except for dropping a couple of stupid wotsits along the way, it's been a brilliant product since it's inception. I'll really miss it if it does descend to the depths of becoming a "jack of all trades" resource gobbler.

for me the kis2011 became problematic after an upgrade to a newer version (11.0.0.556) of the main servers. My win7 x64 would freeze on automatic update of databases when using firexfox4. hard reboot each and every time. solution for me was to re-install older version of kis2011 from a cd that i bought originally (11.0.0.232) weird huh

Like many other long time KAV/KIS users, other than beta'ing, I've kept away from 2011 altogether if only as a form of admittedly futile protest.
I have to say though that even during the development/pre release stages, I didn't find much to moan about as far as functionality and performance etc was concerned.
Maybe I'm just an old "stick in the mud".

I switched to Kaspersky Internet Security a few years ago after I became annoyed when the ZoneAlarm product (which used the Kaspersky AV engine) reduced in functionality BEFORE the subscription had expired as a means of persuading me to renew. (Of course, that had the opposite effect: I had been planning to renew, but changed my mind as a result.)
KIS served me well. Several friends also switched to it on my recommendation.
But KIS 2011 was an absolute disaster on my XP SP3 PC. There were various performance problems - it was becoming like the Norton product of old, where it seemed the entire purpose of the PC was to run Norton and there was no capacity left to run any applications. Every time I tried to use Visual Studio 2008, one version of KIS 2011 caused a blue screen.
I did not renew my subscription to KIS and have been using MS Security Essentials since the turn of the year, with the Comodo free firewall. No issues so far. Well pleased. And they are free.

I would agree up to a point, but imo it is the bloatware of many operating systems which is causing AV apps to slow things down. See this thread:
http://forums.thinkbroadband.com/windows/f/3973311-h...
Now the learned people in Microsoft's community claim that the winsxs folder contains 'links' and not files, in that they are not really there, and said HDD space is not really being taken up. Regardless of that claim, my HDD reports it, Windows reports and if I fill my hard drive, I will bet that WIndows will panic when the free space reaches a crucial point due to winsxs.
Additionally, 1/3 to 1/2 of my full AV scans are winsxs, so if there's nothing there, why does it take so long to scan? AV software could seriously do with not scanning anything in the real-time scans, if it hasn't been accessed in any manner since the last full scan. Viri can't just transfer from cluster to cluster without entering the memory or drive cache, so as long as these areas are being protected, there should be little chance of viri propagating. Why endlessly scan dormant areas?

I've been running Kaspersky Internet Security for two years quite contentedly and have no desire to change.
I'm running it too never having used it before.
I was using NOD32 but fancied a change.
I like the virtual keyboard which is supposed to be safer than typing passwords in through the keyboard !?
I don't know how much it is to renew the licence but I probably will renew it if it isn't too expensive which for me means more than £35 for an annual licence.

It's expensive to renew KIS online at their website, you can get a disc etc from an online web-store e.g. amazon
As long as the licence hasn't expired you can upgrade once i.e. KIS 2010 can be upgraded to KIS 2011.
It might be possible to get a cheap version of KIS 2009 and upgrade it to KIS 2011.

I've had KIS for many years and as long as you put things in the trusted zone you will have no problems.

Go for the 2009/2010 versions. The code is still useable for 2011 and you'll find much better deals. The 3 and 5 user packs are usually even better value and start at under a tenner.

As a test, I've recently had KIS 2011 running with Chrome and TBBM without any problems whatsoever. This was on an XP Home box with a 2.8 Gig Athlon with a SiS chipset, a Gig of DDR, 100 Gig IDE drive partitioned to 40/60, an old nVidia 128M gfx card and onboard NIC. I've run KIS 2010 (My preferred release) on lower spec machines without too many problems.
