I've used Avast! for several years now on 4 PC's. Never had a complaint, but you have to put up with a daily announcement, in a female American voice, that it's been updated. No big deal, though.

Previously I used paid-for Symantec, which slowed my computer to a crawl.

There's Avira and MSE as well as Avast mentioned. Check the reports and take your pick: http://www.av-comparatives.org/en/comparativesreview...

I tried Free Avast! for a while and was pretty impressed so moved up to the paid version on offer for a 2 year sub for the price of one. I can't fault it. It seems to slow the system a little while the updates arrive (daily and sometimes a couple of times a day with voice on confirmation as mentioned above) but otherwise it does the job and I like the control you have too.
Just my 10p's worth, hope it helps

Tbh, if I felt like paying I wouldn't go for any of the free ones. Kaspersky is much better.

You can switch that off in the Settings.

Commodo IS (free) definitely on a par with Kaspersky IS.

Comodo is an excellent choice, but like many of the free AV's watch for false positives.
Also, ensure that the installer interface is fully explored and that GeekBuddy and Comodo's DNS etc is not installed.
