Kaspersky breaks Microsoft's Windows XP operating system!!

When did this happen?
I had problems with KIS 2012 on Monday (04-02-13) and had very limited access to the net, including no access to the router GUI, and put it down to a conflict with a Malwarebytes update on the same day.

|
Stopped using KIS in the middle of last year as it was getting bloated and buggy and not what it was some years previous, just as well really as my OS is Windows XP

From Kaspersky-
"We apologize for the inconvenience. It does appear that there was a hiccup with an Update pushed out causing Windows XP machines to lose internet connectivity. An update was just released that should address the issue, what I will need you to do is:
To get XP users internet connectivity (temporarily), please disable the Web AV component of your protection policy for your managed computers. After doing so;
In Security Centre (or Admin Kit):
1.) Go to the Repositories section >> (Right click) Updates >> All Tasks >> Clear updates repository.
2.) Go to the Repositories section >> (Right click) Updates >> Download Updates
After taking this step, please run your group Update task for Managed Computers. After the update has been pushed to your workstations, please re-enable your Web AV component in your protection policy. This should resolve the issue. "
But be aware people are reporting up to 3 to 4 hours to download the repository!!!

I just uninstalled KIS 2012 and reinstalled it on Monday - possibly coincidentally during the reinstall it took out Malwarebytes since it called it incompatible - updated KIS 2012 and then everything was OK.
Problem was I couldn't do much with KIS 2012, except uninstall, nor could I access most web sites. XP was running fine though...other than browsers

Is there a Kaspersky linky for this? run your group Update task for Managed Computers. Does it affect individual copies, like KIS issued free to Barclays Bank customers?

That was the problem, the internet connection, while XP worked fine. I assume that by the time you re-installed it, Kaspersky had already found that their latest update was the culprit and they then put out the message on how to put things right 2 hours later.

This is the only link I know of http://forum.kaspersky.com/index.php?showtopic=255508 other than that I have no idea.
Edited: Most of the reports are for businesses with multi-stations, so it may not apply for the home user version with just one pc, but I don't really know.

Seemed to affect my Barclays copy...

That is what happens when you bolt on useless components on to your core product.

I find KIS to be pretty good, but it does stop me from streaming video from the Lovefilm website, I have to disable KIS to watch.

Indeed, content inspection and modification - a dangerous game unless you know absolutely what you are doing.
