Setting up a VPN for security

I am attempting to setup a VPN for security reasons on my internet connection.

I am attempting to use a free one first to make sure i can gain a connection before i choose one thats charged.

The one i chose to use is justfreevpn.

When attempting to connect to the net i get a ERROR 800.

I have disabled the firewall on Kaspersky internet security 2013 incase that was the issue and also disabled the hardware firewall on the Virgin Media Superhub 2 and its still the same.

Can anyone shed a bit of life on this please?

What are you VPNing to? A free one sounds like asking for trouble.

Use something reputable, like VyprVPN or whatever (I don't have any experience in this).

There is no reason a VPN should not work.

There's a few hints of things to try there.

As you stated that you have disabled the firewall so you could try following things:

1. Try to ping the server to make sure that VPN server is reachable.
2. Enable the PPTP Port (TCP 1723) and GRE Port (47) for VPN Connection.
3. delete �http://� and �/� from the server address.

This should solve VPN Error 800 for you.

As a penetration tester I am telling you, you'd be much better not using a VPN than using a free one. A lot of these free ones make your machine effectively an exit node.

Also, what security enhancements are you hoping for by using one? Unless you are connecting to unsecure wifi networks and transmitting pw's in cleartext, I cannot think of the huge benefit?

What is the security risk you are trying to fix?

I am baffled, you are disabling kaspersky, firewalls and the router firewall to make it work. This is outweighing any security benefits you could possibly imagine.
