What do I need for wireless with Sky Broadband?

[link to this post]

Hi,

Recently got sky broadband but the ethernet cable they sent isn't long enough (or rather, the desk is in the wrong place!). Anyway, as the package is Sky Broadband Wireless, presumably I just need a USB dongle to get it working that way. Can anyone offer advice on which one I should buy and how to set it up?

Thanks.

Hi,

The sky router is a Netgear model so perhaps a matching dongle would offer the best speeds?

However if net access is all thats needed then a cheaper one may be ok.

If you are running XP, then it's pretty straightforward - I usually let Windoze manage the adaptor - it seems to work well for me that way.

My posts are my opinions unless stated otherwise.

Alternatively he can acquire a long extension of cat5e or RJ11 cable for about five/ten quid, if he is only running one PC and doesn't mind a bit of DIY.

Skybroadband Max down 8116 kb/s up 654 kb/s latency 59 ms I'm I happy? you bet :0)

Actually, this is a consideration for me. My PC doesn't have an ethernet port -will this be a problem? I can't see how unless of course, I have wireless problems?

Any help/advice very welcome indeed before I go ahead and order.

Wonnyjilkinson stick one in for less than 5.00

You really do need it to

1. Initially set-up your router
2. Firmware upgrades (never update firmware wirelessly)
3. Safer if inputting credit card details into comp

There must be some more reasons, cant think of any more at the moment.

Anyway 5.00 and a small screwdriver and you are sorted.
