How can I find out if my line supports 16mb Max?

[link to this post]

Hi. I am currently on Eclipse Evolution Option 2 (up to 8Mbps) and my speeds are not very good anymore, especially during peak times. The connection can be at times very unreliable and have frequent disconnects.

I am very tempted to go with Sky, either the 8Mbps (for 5 a month) or even the 16Mbps (for 10 per month). Basically I just need some advice, should I switch? Also how can I tell if I will be able to get 16Mbps speeds?

Thanks

Do you know what speed your router syncs at? Also, what noise margin do you have?

If you are connecting at 8Mbps and have some noise margin left then you could probably connect on an up to 16Mb.

I have found this in my router setup:
WAN Connection Speed DOWN 4736Kb/s : UP 444Kb/s

I cannot find anything to do with the noise margin though... Does this mean I will not benefit from the 16mb package (apart from the no caps?). I am using an Efficient Networks 5861 router.

Thanks.

If you don't know your attenuation (or line length), there's no way to tell.

[edit] It's all dependant on the length of your line. If your EN5861 can't tell you, you should borrow a router or modem that can.

Well I am only getting 1668 down and 448 up, with
SNR margin 21.4 dB
Line ATT 38.4

So do you think i can get the 16MB connection?

I would say that as you are connecting at 4736Kb/s that this is probably the maximum your line can cope with.

ADSL2 may make it a little faster but I don't think Sky usually put people on ADSL2 unless they are getting 8Mb/s on standard ADSL. Even if you went over you probably wouldn't get anywhere near 16Mb/s.

You need to find out why you are only getting 1668Kb/s if you have a 21.4 SNR margin.

Are you sure the SNR margin isn't for the upstream?

If you do have 21.4 margin then either you have a very unstable line and it has been forced to this or Max isn't connecting properly for some reason.

Can you confirm BOTH of your SNR figures (up and down)?
