Can only use router supplied by Sky?

[link to this post]

Is it correct that you can only use the router supplied by Sky? The guy on the phone didn't sound too confident but he stuck to it when I questioned it.

I have a high-end router which I'm not going to replace with their 40 piece of tat.

I was also told that the max upload speed is 4Mb and that speeds of over 17-18Mb are possible if you're close enough to the exchange; is this true?

Use the sky router to make sure the line is OK and working. According to the t&c's you have to use their router. There is the ability to get the ADSL router username/pwd (google), so you can the use your own.

The Sky user site gives details on how to get your account details out of the router. I have to agree with the above poster (Use The Sky Router), however, I would like to have my account details in case the sky router fails.

Sky Max syncs at up to 16Mb/768kb, depending on snr and attn.

It's a cheap piece of tat which I doubt has anywhere near the functionality of my existing router.

Thanks for that. The guy on the phone told me that the data is encrypted and only the supplied router can decrypt it - I was sure this was an outright lie and this only goes to prove it.
