Just migrated from UKonline today - not good!

[link to this post]

So today was my activation day with SKY, and as expected it has not gone smoothly.

Whilst I can still connect to the internet, the speed of my connection has dropped significantly.

I was previosly stable on UKonline achieving 4-5Mbit connection (best possible on a 8Mbit service due to distance from the exchange), but following the migration I have dropped to 1-2Mbit.

Fortunately I recorded my line stats before the migration to show Sky in the event of something like this happening (call me a cynic!)

My line stats prior to migration were as follows:

Line attenuation 43Db down and 12.5Db up
Noise margin 10Db down and 10Db up

After there were as follows:

Line attenuation 44Db down and 28Db up
Noise margin 5.6Db down and 6Db up

Now I know that SKY and UKonline share the same LLU, so when SKY tech support tell me that 2Mbit is the best I can achieve (I signed up for their 16Mbit MAX service) due to distance from the exchange and DUE TO THE THE LIMITATIONS OF THE SUPPLIED WIRELESS ROUTER!!!, needless to say I was unhappy.

To cut a long story short I am now waiting on a call back from "Tier 3" support which may take between 3-5 working days.

Hopefully they will provide more sensible answers if and when they call me.

Any similar experiences out there??

Cheers
dabossman

p.s. 1Mbit is unbearable when you have been used to a faster connection!

You should get between 6-8Mb but you have noise on the line which is limiting you. Did you try your UKOnline router yet?

Yeah i have tried my other router (used when with UKonline).

But it syncs at 0.5Mbit and I can't connect to SKY as I don't have all the settings needed for using a non-SKY router.

Re noise on the line - My phone is pratically unusable now with static even using a filter.

How on earth can they screw this up??

The only reason I considered moving was because this is a "like for like" service!

I too just migrated today from UKOnline. With me the whole procedure went well from the start really. It took Sky a few hours today to activate my line after BT switched me though. I like the sky router very much, it has so many settings and functions. I was a bit disappointed to realize that the router is only syncing at 10.5 mbps and not any higher as I was expecting, but they did tell me that the max my line can get is about 12 mbps. Still there are 2 mbps missing! Double my previous connection speed with UKO! lol. I guess it makes sense as I was never been able to connect at more than 40 kbps on dialup from here, while I can get 48 kbps at different locations. Even though that I live about 1.3 km from the exchange but it still I could have a low quality line.

The speed tests vary from site to site. Strangely I am not able to achieve more than 8.5 mbps on the speed test here:

http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest/results/id/117555447755252628171.html

However I get a much better speeds upto 13.5 mbps at this site:

http://www.numion.com/

Don't know why!

Anyway for the users who have speed problems I suggest they use the tweek tester here:

http://www.dslreports.com/tweaks

and change their Windows TCP setting as necessary with DrTCP and check again, maybe it will help.

Overall I am quiete happy and I think its fantastic value for money. I hope it proves a reliable service and they bother me too much with their FUP! lol.

Well done sky:-)

sounds like BT have messed something up when switching you over.

If you're getting static on the voice side of the line then log a fault with BT voice and don't mention ADSL.

Chances are once this is fixed your broadband will improve (it's the noise probably causing the problem).

Yip, there is a fault on the line.

Cheers for the advice, I'll let you know what I'm getting when the fault clears.
