Sky Broadband - simple question but... (LLU)

...one I would like answering please...

I currently have BB down my BT line with Virgin Media. It seems that the target max speed is 2.6mbps on my upto 8mb service.

My exchange: http://www.samknows.com/broadband/exchange.php?ecode=LVSTK

I have checked Sky and my exchange has been turned on for Sky BB, so the Sky site says: http://check.skybroadband.com/onnet.aspx I can have base mid or max, but my question is, will I really get those speeds or will it just be the same as what I am on now?

I guess it is an LLU understanding question?

Largely the same as you get now. With those sort of speeds (and assuming you don't have any way of increasing the speeds by making changes in your own home) then Sky will put you on standard ADSL which, whilst managed slightly differently, is essentially the same as the solution you currently have. However, you would be getting 40GB at �5 a month which is a pretty good deal.

ah ok, so although it won't use btwholesale it'll still be limited by the length of my line etc etc, thanks for that.

as you say the �5 per month is the reason i will switch - i have moved house so virgin media have switched my connection at the moment, having loads of problems with it but will one day look to be on sky broadband.

although if there is no speed increase (3MB is the max) then i may have to consider cable bb :S

If you have cable available then that may give you better speeds and a more stable connection. Just whether you want to go the cable route or not, there are pros and cons to either.

yeah... price wise it's more expensive obviously like you say, but then if i value the speed and performance then it would be better...

will see how my virgin connection goes, and once stable i'll decide what to do - obv if it doesn't pick up then sky bb won't be an option - time for cable then...

You may find some stability difference depending on how the isp configures the ADSL link.

Sky default to using interleaving on lines which has some adverse affects but normally results in a more stable connection. Virgin may not offer to switch you to interleave and therefore may never stabilise your connection (even though it can be set on the BT wholesale ADSL product).

So, stability can be affected by the ISP and the lengths to which they are willing to go to sort out the problem. However, if you have problems then sky may not be the best move as their support is not exactly top class (that's what you get for �5 a month).

Post if you continue to have problems and I'm sure you will get lots of responses as to how any issues may be resolved.

I guess the key is to keep on at Virgin then...

And like you say about Sky, for �5 a month the tech support isn't going to be great, Virgin have been reasonably good so far - it's just so frustrating...
