Have I done the right thing?

[link to this post]

Hi
I've been with Plus.Net for about 5 years but have decided to try Sky purely for the price and with the hope Ill receive ADSL2+ that Plus.Net arent offering at this time. I handed over my MAC today to Sky and was told my current line would handle 3MB. I have gone for the Sky Broadband Max package. My current line stats are
ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 3216 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 38.0 db 22.0 db
Noise Margin 21.1 db 23.0 db
Questions are how do I get onto ADSL2+ and could my line cope? The woman on the phone said that she was surprised I was offered the Max package as you cant normally downgrade and that my line test only shows 3MB which would fit into the Mid package offering from Sky.

Great to have everyones thoughts ... good or bad. Thx L

They won't put you on adsl2+ with those line speeds.

Max will give you more download on the fup (but they don't seem to enforce it at the moment anyway) and I think higher upload speed.

Otherwise there is no difference between mid and max on your speed of line so if these aren't of value then you want to try and get them to switch it to mid before it is installed.

EDIT : Didn't fully read your message... With those noise margins you should be getting much higher than 3Mb speed. Something is throttling your connection stats (either regular disconnections in the past or something strange on the line). Connecting to sky will give you faster speeds than you are currently seeing unless there is something fundamentally wrong with your SNR.

Thanks or the info. I did have some connection issues in the first quarter of the year so that might account for the throttling. Subsequently disovered as a faulty REN booster on the line I think. Ill see how I get on with Sky. Might be better with them ...

Mine is 38 atten and connects at full tilt with a 10-13db snr. Atten on it's own does not give the full story but the OPs noise margin suggests they should be getting a much better connection.

Your noise margin is very high. Do you have a lot of extension wiring ? If you have a removable faceplate on the master, connect your router to the test socket and post the results.

I too am with PlusNet and was thinking of going for the Sky mid package. I went to a friends around the corner who has Sky Max and his actual download speeds were only 50 KBytes per second. I currently get 750 KBytes per second on PlusNet so this obviously put me off going to Sky.

So what speed do you other Sky users get in KBytes per sec please? And do they traffic shape and is Bit Torrent useable?

Cheers.

Date 08/09/07 16:13:46
Speed Down - 13383.00 Kbps ( 13.1 Mbps )
Speed Up - 648.19 Kbps ( 0.6 Mbps )
Port 80
Server speedtest1.adslguide.org.uk

And Sky don't throttle Mid or Max packages.
