Just got connected to sky, am I on ADSL2?

[link to this post]

Here are my stats from the netgear dg934gt router sky sent to me:

Port Status TxPkts RxPkts Collisions Tx B/s Rx B/s Up Time
WAN PPPoA 9629115 14868884 0 68241 58728 13:54:34
LAN 100M/Full 14859659 10368702 0 63754 80283 14:00:51
WLAN 11M/54M 4762 0 0 14 0 13:58:17
ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 8554 kbps 764 kbps
Line Attenuation 37 db 9.5 db
Noise Margin 7 db 19 db

Not sure if I am on ADSL or ADSL2, anyone in the know please hazard a guess?

The samknows checker says this about my line:

According to BT Wholesale, your line should be able to support a 6Mbps or greater ADSL connection via ADSL Max.

You are approximately 1.18km from the exchange (straight line distance).

Thanks.

Would say that's definitely ADSL2 (ADSL1 syncs at 8096 on sky, you're getting 8554).

The 764 kbps upstream is also an indicator that the connection is ADSL2 - it would be 416kbps on standard Sky ADSL, IIRC.

I wasn't sure about that as ADSL1 will support higher speeds and I have never got a straight answer from sky as to whether they support 764 upstream on the sky max package even if it is provided via ADSL1.

Thanks for the reply.

Any ideas why I am only getting 8554 on ADSL2? I should be near 16mb. Are my line stats bad?

Your noise margin is only 7dB, you may need to check your wiring to see if this is causing a problem.

Yes it will support it, I can switch between the two modes G.DMT (ADSL1) & ADSL2+ and as such have seen it.

Yep, I'm on MAX on ADSL1 and the router syncs at 768 upstream.

The detailed stats link below will show the mode as G.DMT on ADSL1 connection, but with a DS of 8554 that must be ADSL2 anyway.
Your internal telephone wiring is likely to have far more siginificant affects on the performance of ADSL2+ connections than they do on ADSL1. I believe the higher frequencies used by ADSL2+ could mean that the connection could also be compromised by interference caused by reflections from extensions wired as spurs. Remove the lower panel from the master socket and try the router in the test connection behind it to see if there is a worthwhile improvement. If there is it might be worth fitting a filtered faceplate.

thanks, I will try this when I get home tonight. Will that detailed link still work on a DG934GT?

OMG! I am now synced at :

DownStream Connection Speed 14594 kbps
UpStream Connection Speed 764 kbps

:-)

My extension for upstairs was connected direct to the faceplate from behind, so I took the face plate off from the master socket and found 4 wires were connected. 2 blue and 2 orange. The 2 blue were connected to pins 2 and 5, so I kept them there, and disconnected the 2 orange wires.

While I was there I tried the router direct into the Test connector and it synced at 15225!

Also, while I was messing around by the master socket, I noticed the extension for my sky boxes was not using a filter, so I connected them through a filter.

So, not sure what did it, either cutting the 2 orange wires, or adding a filter for the sky boxes (I suspect it was this) but now I am synced at 15meg and very happy.

One thing that is niggling on my mind is, if I connect direct to the test socket on the master socket I get 15.25meg, but when connecting through the extension upstairs I get 14.5meg. Does that indicate the extension wiring going upstairs is dodgy, or is .75meg a reasonable loss for about 20M of cable.

Thanks!!
