Sky Broadband Connect

[link to this post]

Thinking of moving to Sky Connect when my contract with BT is up in a few months.

What are the speeds like and what are your opinions of the service?

I'd try 'O2 Access' (O2's Off-Network service) instead. 50p more a month in subscription cost and for the moment anyway, there appears to be less/no shaping. Sky Connect is known to be quite heavily shaped at times.

Sky LLU on the other hand is flawless.

I wasn't aware that connect was shaped that badly, other than the congestion at the exchange with it being a BT product obviously. Do you have any links?

It's been in evidence in posts on this forum on many occasions, may be worth a quick search (sorry, would've posted a link to a thread, but have to go out here so no time to search!) although I did find this quote on SkyUser.co.uk's report on Sky removing their Fair Usage Policy from their 16Mbit MAX product -

"Please note that where 'NO Fair Use Policy applies' is used, this must be clearly referencing the Sky Broadband Max product, as traffic management measures are in effect on Sky Broadband Connect."

Hope that helps,

matt

I'm also thinking of migrating to Sky Connect - do you still have to use their router as I'm out in the countryside on a line thats a bit subject to the weather and I rate the 2wire router I've just bought?

Officially yes, but thousands don't. Your call, you know the risks involved.

Lol! Thanks. That and the 12 month contract pushed me to Plusnet.

My opinion of Sky Connect is pretty positive - although I'd prefer Sky Mid if my exchange was unbundled because it is so much cheaper. I've had Sky Broadband for almost two years now and the service has been virtually problem-free. I normally get 4.2 Mbps download speeds ("Up to eight Mbps"), although this can and does drop at very busy times, because I live some distance from the Exchange. The free Sky router and anti-virus software were very useful and the ordering process itself was easy and efficient.
So I'd give the service a score of nine out of a possible ten points.
