Just joined Sky from Entanet and DL speeds at 3.2KB/s WTF?

[link to this post]

Does anyone know why my DL speeds have gone from a poor 150-200KB/s using Entanet to an extremely poor 3.2KB/s with Sky?

I'm not on an unbundled exchange so in real terms the sky broadband is still via BT.
Connected the router tonight and now getting this pathetically low speed.
I'm not a tech guru so not sure on what to check but I do have access to the router control panel wink so can see the stats.

Connection Speed:- Down: 2592 kbps Up: 448 kbps
Line Attenuation:- Down: 34 db Up: 18 db
Noise Margin:- Down: 10 db Up: 21 db

Any advice?

Seems about right if those speeds are between 5pm and midnight.
Are you using the supplied Sky router? I also left entanet for Sky Connect and my connection speed and throughput doubled, though 5pm-midnight isn't great.
Now on 7Mb instead of 3.5Mb even with the router I used with Entanet (Sky router is better though) and get full speed more or less all the time outside the 5pm-midnight slow period.

Well, although your noise margin seems to suggest you might get a better sync speed if you made changes to your house phone wiring, you should still be seeing higher downloads than that. However, Sky Connect is only a rebadged BT product which Sky have little control over, so I'm not sure you'll do much better at peak times.

So... to clarify. It's reasonable to expect that I can only achieve speeds of 3.2kb/s with Sky when I got 150+kb/s with Entanet using what is essentially the same product?

i cant speak for the connect service as i have never been on it -on their LLU from the start, although if some of the posts on here are typical then i am glad!

however, are you on connect by choice, has sky said if there is no capacity on their LLU network (if applicable) is there not a better service you could move to, eg any of the LLU services probably, i dont know if you are still in the get-out-of-contract times but have you looked at samknows website? if you put in your number there it will tell you who (if any) LLU providers you could get

if you dont know the website just put in samknows into your fav search engine and have a look at what is avail in your local telephone exchange

Although it may be the same underlying product from BT Wholesale. The throughput you can get via the ISP you are currently using on that service can differ, either slightly or extremely.

So yes, it is possible to see differences like depending on what traffic shaping Sky do compared to Enta.

I can't say - I've never been on Sky Connect, but I do know that it is a BTW product, and therefore subject to all the woes that accompany these.

Were your connection speeds the same? They look far from good, 2.5Meg sync at 34dB attenuation is very low, a good line with those figures will sync at 8Meg.

As for throughput - if the connection info is otherwise the same, then you are looking at congestion probably, and the ISP can have a major impact on this.

i.e. any unlimited BT Wholesale product selling for under £40 a month is prone to high congestion at peak times.

I'm connected to the master socket in the house and am getting the following router stats.

Connection Speed: 5696 kbps (down) - 448 kbps (upstream)
Line Attenuation: 34 db (down) - 18 db (upstream)
Noise Margin: 13 db (down) - 22 db (upstream)

All this doesn't mean much to me but doing a think broadband speedtest when connected to the master socket I get this:

http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest/results/id/1... frown

Any advice appreciated because with my last provider I managed over 300kb/s download speeds and have in the past (with zen) in the same house on the same BT line got up to 600 kb/s (although this only lasted around 2 months).

I'm about 1km away from my exchange and although not unbundled yet (see Woodseats exchange on Samknows) I should be getting much MUCH better than I get now. However I need a good argument to go back to Sky with and get them to investigate properly.

You're on sky connect - its very busy/congested in the evenings. Like the M25. If there is no hope of LLU in your exchange, you'd be better off with a different ISP (not O2 Access).
