My son has just purchased a new laptop with "n" standard wi fi. He is also having Sky Broadband installed soon. Does anyone know if the supllied Sky router will support this new standard? Thanks

best to phone them and ask I would guess, but somehow I would doubt it.

mind you, I should be looking for a new router myself, still got the same netgear 834gt they gave me 3 years ago, supposedly it could do 106Mbs, but I could never get it to dp more than 54, even with a wireless N adaptor plugged into my pc.

N standard routers require two non-overlapping wi-fi channels to operate properly, and in some urban areas that may be a challenge. Of course, the speed will only be an issue when transferring files between PC's on the network - 54Mbps is more than adequate for the fastest broadband.

I do use my pc for gaming, and bog standard wireless really doesnt come up to scratch.

Unfortunatly I dont have much choice in the matter, bt openreach engineers disconnected all my internal wiring several years ago while looking for a fake fault from orange broadband, found some minor fault on the internal wiring and disconnected the lot, never could get them to reconnect it, I was told it would cost me something stupid like £182 to get someone out to fix it from bt.

It will "support" it in the sense that it will communicate with the laptop, however, it will only do so at the older 802.11g standard - 54mb/sec. 802.11b/g/super-g/n are backwards compatible.

FWIW O2 latest router offers 802.11n.

Wireless N isn't going to be any better for latency than any other form of wireless.

You don't need BT to install new internal wiring. You can do it yourself, or get someone in to do it for you, if you don't feel confident.
