Thinking of Going Sky - need some info!

[link to this post]

Thinking of getting sky broadband (along with sky+HD, Sky Talk/line rental for full package)

Anyway the questions are :-

1) Do you have to use the router they provide? If so is it decent?

2) If you do have to use it and connection details are hardwired, is there anyway to "obtain" the info so you can input it into a different router?

3) I have a lot of wireless gadgets (ipod touch/laptops/PS3 other PC's etc) around the house is the router upto the task?

4) I'd like to get Sky all in all to get one bill instead of BT/Zen/misc bills.. and would like to know your thoughts on the speed's / "unlimited" usage etc

1) It is part of the Terms and Conditions. Netgear i believe and seems to do the job for most

2) A number of posters have posted that they have obtained the hard-wired username and password and use their own router. Not seen any reports that Sky have taken any action. Sky would obviously not provide support unless you were using their router when you phone with issues.

3) Again most seem to find it OK I believe, it is only 802.11g standard and not N. Wireless has so many variables (location, house construction ) you have to use it to find what it will do. Many people now use homeplugs for distant locations if they have issues.

4) On the Top package speed will be dependant on your line but Sky declare it is "unlimited", both in speed (line dependant) and usage. No reports that seem to conflict with that as yet.

Just a tad sad..a wee bit old...wink

Thanks for the informative answers - much appreciated.

I'll be giving this some serious thought - something I never considered is I also want line rental via sky but I'ved since found out Sky don;t lease the line rental via BT Wholesale but do it themselves so if I ever didn;t like sky broadband it would take a few days to get the line back. smile

It may also leave you without any internet for 7odd days and cost you a small fortune to get BT to "take it back"

Return to Donor is free (as long as the line was transferred away from BT originally) - and yes, it does mean about a full week without ADSL service. Same with Bulldog (as was), Tisacli and TalkTalk fully unbundled services.

This may be the case, however, there is an increasing number of people being charged, or forcibly charged by BT to take the line back - hence the comment.

We've had customers in the past that have moved from BT to a full LLU provider, who then wanted to migrate to us and had to stump up the full connection fee.

Ouch. It was very clear in the Bulldog forum (in summer 08) that the majority of BT call centre staff had no idea how to action an RTD, and usually said there was no such thing; and a full new order (£250) had to be put through. It was discovered by one poster that asking for the Customer Options Team and not allowing anyone else to assist would ensure an RTD was done correctly.

Well thats nearly 2 years ago; so knowing BT everything can easily have changed !
