Hi all,
I recently moved to Sky Unlimited from Zen. (I really didn't want to move from Zen but they are expensive and not unlimited.)
With Zen I was connecting at about 2.5 meg but now I'm with Sky that has dropped to 1.5
I understand that contention would make it slower but I'm getting this speed at all hours of the day and it never increases.
Surely if I was getting 2.5 with Zen then my line can take it and therefore my Sky speed should be similar!?
Any ideas on what I can do?
Thanks

You're not the only one! Six months in to my contract, dropped from 2Meg to 1/2Meg (that's half a meg). I complained -- they said there was "no fault with the equipment, it must just be busy" ... "for two weeks?" was my response. Magically my line went back up to 1Meg an hour later but it's never gone back up to what I'm calling the "introductory period".

I feel your pain
It just seems a cop out for them to dismiss these problems so easily (although I have yet to call them...)

They are more conservative on noise margins for many connections so that may lose you some speed. What are the stats on Sky and do you know what they were on Zen?
EDIT : Also, might be that sky is defaulting to ADSL2+ which may be slower than ADSL on longer lines. Forcing it to ADSL may gain some speed back.

Unfortunately I didn't take a copy of the stats that I was getting with Zen.
I will have a look at my stats and post them when I get home later.

How can I find out if I'm on ADSL2+ or not?

How can I find out if I'm on ADSL2+ or not?
Good question. I can't actually find it on the sky router, either how to check or any way to change it. Someone else might know. If your speeds are less than 5Mbps in the stats I would ring Sky and ask them to change it to ADSL1 to see if the speeds increase. You might have to bully your way through to 2nd or 3rd line support to find someone that knows what you are asking for though.

So, just logged in to sky online and got the following info:
When you purchased Sky Broadband, we estimated that the maximum download speed for your line was: 3.0Mb
Next to that I see:
Download Speed
Your connection has been set to a download speed of up to
1.5Mb (1536Kb)
That makes me sad
Any idea why they would set it so low?

It was probably part of their standard line monitoring in the first 10 days. Ring Sky, ask if you are on ADSL2+ and if you are if they will force it to ADSL as that will likely give you better speeds on a longer line. Also, check your noise margin in the stats - if it is above 7dB it may mean that they picked up noise during the monitoring period and you might be able to get them to reset it down to 7dB (which could result in an unstable connection!).

I'll give them a call and will post my stats later.
Thanks for the replies

OK so these are my stats:
Connection Speed: 1535 kbps / 605 kbps
Line Attenuation : 66.0 dB / 41.3 dB
Noise Margin: 9.2 dB / 12.7 dB
Any clues in there?
Thanks

Looks like ADSL2+.
Your router may have an option to select g.dmt (standard ADSL) rather than Auto. It would be worth trying that (you'll need to restart the router afterwards and may have to save the setting).

Thanks John. No setting on the router so will give Sky a call and ask them to change it.

Update:
Ok so I rang Sky and they said they couldn't change me on to ADSL from ADSL2+ as that was something that needed to be done at the exchange...not sure how true that is...
BUT
They did set my line to 2.6Mb (upping it by over 1 meg!)!
I'm more than happy with that (provided it doesn't go down again...).
Why I had to call them to get this speed though is beyond me. Surely they should have put me on to the best speed my line could handle from the start. So frustrating.
