can anyone help with my sky broadband?
i'm use Sky Broadband Unlimited.
I apparently get a downstream of 4095Kb.
I'm new to computers so i might be missing something obvious.
When i use the speed checker on this site it says i get 3.2 megabyte.
When i actually download something the most i get is about 450kb.
Why is this?
If anyone needs any info just ask

And are you sure that when downloading, it doesn't say 450 K Bytes ps? Cuz that's about right for 3.2 Mbps!

You haven't answered my Qs. Post copies of the actual readings that you quoted to show you haven't mixed up your units as many do here.
You line is capable of 8 Meg sync. Have you just joined Sky? Cuz they start you off on 4 Meg.

i may have mixed up my units.
Speed Down 3266.55 Kbps ( 3.2 Mbps )
Speed Up 647.00 Kbps ( 0.6 Mbps )
when i download i get between 400 and 470kB/s
well i've been with sky a few years, how do you know what my line can handle can i ask? any advice would be welcome, the download speed is pathetic

Your throughput is correct for your Sync (usually about 83% of Sync) assuming you are measuring your downloads in Bytes. However your Sync is running about 50% of expected. See here: http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/max_speed_calc.php

You asked me how I knew what your line should do, No router is required! Just feed your Downstream Attenuation of 42 into that page.

Unfortunately, your noise margin of 5 shows you have a noise problem.

Is your router plugged into the master socket or an extension?
Gonna need a fair bit of info about your extension wiring...

It wouldn't be "that different" as Sky have probably capped your line to prevent disconnections.
What you need to do is to get your noise margin up. Does that increase in the master socket?

ummm i'm not even sure, i'd have to find out tomorrow, if i increased it, would i be able to get better speeds?

Connect to the test socket behind main socket faceplate, without any phone, and then give us the stats.
