Ring Wire

[link to this post]

Seems as if my ring wire is connected behind my face plate, would it be worth removing this, as this might be causing the humming problem that i have mentioned in the other thread on here?.

Can't hurt.
As someone who's been around (on these forums) for years, I'm surprised you haven't checked that already wink

The thing is i have the phone/adsl plugged in the test socket now, so would there be any improvement if i took the ring wire out, thats why i haven't already, would the same performance come from the test socket as it would if the ring wire was removed?.

Yes, because the ring wire is introduced after the test socket.

I thought the first thing a "Fountain of Knowledge" would do is to remove any potential things that could harm connection speed!

Good point, but the thing is, i have left it attached as apparently the new BT openreach sockets already have filters built in for the ring wire, so didn't know if it would be worth removing it or not, but i am not sure how true the filter story is?.

Apparently the new BT openreach sockets already have a filter for the ring wire, would it still be worth removing this, it is the wire connected to point 3 isn't it?.

Ok, just removed the ring wire, well i hope it was, it was connected to point 3 on the socket, this is the results, the humming sound i seem to be getting which has been discussed in another thread seems to be gone now, but with the BT faceplate out of the test socket, when i plug the phone in the socket i dont get any dial tone, i have to plug the whole thing back in to get a dial tone, as before i removed the ring wire, i could get a dial tone with the phone plugged in without the faceplate plugged in the test socket, why has this changed?.

The ring wire should have been connected to the removable faceplate, so I'm not sure how this can affect the test socket?

Re: Ring Wire (Update, Removed Wire Slower Sync)

Scrub my last post i think it was me being dumb,

I've also just spoke to sky because my broadband has took a turn for the worse by taken the ring wire out, it has gone from a sync of 14209 to 12362, but for some reason i am also getting loads of errors on the line, before taken the ring wire out i didn't have any, the upload sync has also dropped to 765 from 1086?.

Re: Ring Wire (Update 2 - Ring Wire / Sync)

[re: deleted] [link to this post]

It has gone quite dead here, i am probably giving everyone a headache, just to let you know though i have managed to get the downstream sync back up to 13549 but the upload sync is still at 765, the agent at sky said at first that they was pushing 16mb down though line but i was only getting a sync of 12142, they said it must be line related but i insisted i had a better sync before i messed about with the line, anyways they managed to get it up to 13549 which isn't far from what i had it on before i took the ring wire out, it was on 14209 before, but how did they do that if they said they they was already pushing 16mb down and that was my max, anyway i have cut all the ring wires from all phone points in the house which has resolved the humming noise on the phone line, i've just gotta try and get the sync back to how it was now, any thoughts on this appreciated?. wink

It's always best to check your stats to see what's changed.

Basically just my down and up sync had changed and i think the noise margin on the up sync had changed too, i've been on to sky though and finally got my down sync back to how it was after them telling me i couldn't get the sync i had before as my line wouldn't handle it, just gotta wait for them to do the up sync now, and then back to normal.

Pushing 16Meg down the line - i.e. what their DLM thinks your line will do.

If you have fiddled with wiring you may have altered noise characteristics, without pictures to go along with your words it is hard to make head or tail of what you are posting.

With test socket in use, no other phone socket should work for that phone number. If they are then your wiring is bad.

IMPORTANT: When fiddling with phone wiring unplug ADSL modem for the duration.

I did have pictures, i took a screenshot of my stats before i messed about and after, and the stats was pretty much the same after just with a reduced line sync, i have pretty much got it back to how the down sync was before now though with plenty of calls to sky, its just the upstream they say them seem to cant change still, even though one of the tech people changed it before, oh well i've got the down sync almost back to how it was, i will work on the upstream, also i didn't check if the other phone sockets worked while i was plugged in the test socket, as i don't have two phones to check this.

You mean the upstream sync has reduced but the upstream snr has stayed the same?

No, when the upstream sync was higher the snr was lower, but now the upstream sync is down again, the snr is much higher.

So, it was confusing to say nothing has changed. It sounds like Sky have capped the upload again. Can you ask them to uncap it?

Spend £4.99 on a cheap corded phone or try your existing phone in another socket.
