Just got activated in the new house which is apparently 350 metres away from the exchange, just looked at the line stats and this is what i've got, is it good or bad for that distance away from the exchange and what speed should i expect?.
ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 4095 kbps 510 kbps
Line Attenuation 17.0 dB 9.6 dB
Noise Margin 15.5 dB 23.5 dB
4095 the standard start speed for Sky DLM system, it should creep up
www.farina1.com/adsl comes in with a 20Meg connection speed

there you go, up to a reasonable speed now

They said it would go quicker, but i cant see how as the noise margin is down to almost 7 dB now, which is the lowest sky will let it go at.
no that it at 17M for you..... Better then the 7M I get.

If 7dB is their target then not much more available.
17Meg will do for now I am sure Fibre probably in a year or two.

Maybe - but if its 350m from the exchange, then maybe not with no cabinet?
James - be* pro - on THFB - sync about 17.2mbps - BQM

I dont think thats the real length of the line though, i think the line is much longer, i think if it was from my house straight to the exchange the attenuation would be a bit lower than the 17 i have got.
I have done a speedtest and the real world speeds comes in at around 16Mb, i got around 12Mb at the max at the other house, so an improvement so i am happy, the house is a new build as well so maybe if it wasn't i would get slightly better speeds as maybe the line would be closer to the exchange, i think the upload speed i've got at the moment could be higher though, so might give it the 10 days and ask about that again.

That seems to be the the target in my case as well. Creeped up to 8700 with a 6db (at night) after 4 days, then it seems have stabilised at 8100 with a 7db (at night). Never lost any sync through the period.
On o2 without DLM or interleaving i got around 9000 down and 1000 up
Sky with DLM and interleaving 8100 down 768 up, so not a vast amount in it to be honest.

Your getting better than me and I've only got 12dB of attenuation..
Still "Training" only been 7 days, will wait till the 10 are up and give them a call..
Noise margin was constant at 14dB odd but then after one of the "Training" re-syncs dropped to 7.5...

How far are you from the exchange on the samknows website, my downstream stats have changed for the better, getting this now.

Connection Speed 19002 kbps 1090 kbps
Line Attenuation 12.0 dB 8.0 dB
Noise Margin 7.1 dB 9.1 dB
May hit the magic 20 perhaps
I'm about 200M away from the exchange, samknows came up as 0M

I used to live in the centre of Canterbury, got 5 meg on a good day.
Hit the magic 20 meg last night here though:-

Is that 20Mb though, cause even though i've synced at over 19000 my real world speeds was around 17Mb, so what sync would you need, to get the advertised 20Mb that sky offer?.

what sync would you need, to get the advertised 20Mb that sky offer?. The advertised 20 Meg is the Connection/Sync Speed, as is that of all ISPs in accordance with Ofcom guidelines.
However, FYI, to get a 20 Meg Throughput you would need to Sync at about 24 Meg.

I thought thats the way it worked, so basically syncing at 20000 would be the max you could get on sky llu?.
Hi,
The speed quoted by sky is the sync speed not actual throughput of the line.
Actual throughput seems fairly good, not seen much in the way of contention, was getting 1.9Mb/sec from the test files on here and that's with a wireless connection, I was reasonably impressed
Yup
My sync dropped to 16000 odd for some reason so decided to try the router in the test socket, now getting over 19000 so seems the ring wire is messing with my connection, so gonna try removing it and see what happens.
so basically syncing at 20000 would be the max you could get on sky llu? Not necessarily! ADSL2+ is capable of up to 24 Meg, but many ISPs, incl. BT & O2, market it as "Up to 20 Meg" so as not to raise peoples' expectations too much, but they don't actually cap it to 20 Meg.

I think you would have to be living on top of the exchange to get 24Mb, with a direct cable from the computer to the exchange.

Maybe; a half mile line length would do it.
But you posed the Q!

I live under half a mile from the exchange, just i think my line is much longer, unfortunately.

You attn. says it's about 0.75 mile. Get the attn. down to 12 dB and you'd be in business.

It was late, give you that one

I get 10.5 - 11dB in the master socket
Not checked over the weekend but was still maxed out at 20 on Friday ...

I paid the Openreach Guy with a cuppa and biscuits and he done it for me, new socket on the extension as well
