While Sky will probably not use the MAC, best way to start ball rolling is get the MAC from O2 and pass it onto Sky if they ask for it.
This helps to trigger your notice period with O2, and once you have the Sky Broadband up and running, double check two days later with O2 that they've seen you move broadband to sky and to sort out your final bill.

Are you also taking advantage of Sky's offer of 6 months free broadband ?
I am !

I'm in the process of switching from o2 home phone and broadband to Sky and Sky have taken care of everything to do with the switch.
Router is on it's way and it switches over next week, painless switch so far.

Mine switches over this friday, glad to hear that it is a painless switch !

When I switched over from O2, it was flawless. I did not have any loss of service at all.
Good luck with your switch overs.

I wasn't so lucky, Sky switched me over in what is probably a record time (2 working days), but the router arrived four days after I was switched so there was plenty of downtime (and of course without the router I couldn't extract my username/password to use a different router).

The switchover went okay after all !
I came home from work earlier on today and couldn't get online, I simply switched to the Sky router and I was up and running.
I didn't even need to enter the password that came with the Sky router.

That's a wireless password isn't it?

Same for me, it went live Tuesday (8th). Started off at 4Mbit as they said it's now up to this
tonight.
ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 9215 kbps 945 kbps
Line Attenuation 34.5 dB 21.3 dB
Noise Margin 11.1 dB 14.7 dB
So a fair way to go until the speed maxes out.
Very pleased so far, bought a nice long ethernet cable today so Anytime+ is working too.
The password on the card and on the setup guide is for the wireless connection.

I don't know, I never read the instructions lol
It must be as I am using an ethernet (wired) connection.

Curly and Poppet, did you need to get a MAC from O2 to switch over?

Curly and Poppet, did you need to get a MAC from O2 to switch over? It's always best to request your MAC code prior to switching provider, talk talk and sky do not subscribe to the MAC process , so won't actually use it, But this will act as a signal to o2 that you are contemplating leaving them, they very well may ring you offering you cheaper than you are currently paying.,
But before you do switch,
But make sure that you have given them any min period (usually 30 days ) notice period before you switch provider , to avoid being charged by 2 isp's

I don't think Sky needed the MAC code (as Mr Saffron commented in another post which I have copied below) but I gave it anyway as I didn't want to risk it !

it all depends if your current phone line is with BT or a BT wholesale provider as to whether or not you need a MAC code for SKY LLU SVBN
I moved from o2 too and also had to enter a mac like the OP and other o2 migrations to SVBN ive seen on their forum, aswell as other ISPs, those that werent ASKED for the mac code where people who had a Telecoms provider thats not BTw
the only time it seems a MAC is not requested by SKY is if your coming from a full MPF LLU provider with phone such as Talk Talk ...or Virgin Cable or Primus Telecom CPS (phone) as these phone lines (over which the broadband is provisioned) that are void from the MAC system as they are not controlled by BTw - however, if you are with BT or a BTw telecoms provider and have broadband ISP over it and you dont get the MAC code before signing up to sky, then you run the risk of not being able to get it at all as by the next day (after your sky order) the line change request has gone through to BTw and your ISP can not generate a MAC code - in this situation (on SVBN) SKY still take the line but your broadband order may have a delay on it because its done later from the phone line order - this is on SVBN only, if your going onto EasyNet (which MUST have a MAC to switch the broadband between ISPs on BTw) then your ISP can generate a MAC code after your phone line has switched to SKY (seen it happen) because on easynet its a BTw phone line and still bound into the MAC system and once switch has taken place it is back on the system and its then possible for the ISP to generate the MAC, then you can the provide the MAC to SKY and switch the broadband 5-7 days later
so bottom line is - with SVBN you dont need the MAC code too switch, but most of the time SKY request it and not providing it when requested can cause delays with your broadband provision and thus possible down-time of internet between the ISPs, 2 weeks is not unheard of too - and ALWAYS get a MAC code before signing up, especially if your phone line is BT or BTw or you end up in the situation I mention above, unable to get one and in a bit of a tickle...however if your coming from Talk Talk, Virgin Cable or have phone with Primus Telecom CPS (regardless of ISP) you will not be asked to enter a MAC code and most times broadband and phone go live same day.
Ofcom are currently devising a MAC procedure for switching between providers that currently dont require one in an attempt to prevent ISP SLAMMING (ISPs duping users into signing up to what they think is phone only..such as talk talk (or sky), then realising after the switch they have lost their current Broadband ISP for talk talk (or sky) as they have provisioned both as they can only provide their own broadband over their own lines)
