This system doesn't sound as secure !

Its the public internet, if you want to protect your information, encrypt it. This has nothing to do with billing.

Since your phone line is plugged into a Sky DSLAM at the exchange, Sky know exactly who is connected and whom to bill.

Its not the same as BTwholesale where your login information identifies which ISP your data needs to passed to.

Oh I see. Makes sense I suppose.

No, everyone on Sky LLU will be using MER - its an alternative way Sky use to not require issuing userID and password to everyone (as almost every other ISP does). Its similar to the BE/O2 way of connecting users.

Im on LLU phone and broadband and i connect with PPPOA so not every ones on MER,
although my line dose detect as a BT wholesale line even thought i pay rental to sky and they requested the line fitting never been BT before, So maybe its something to do with that

If your line is via BT wholesale, then your phone service is set up for Sky using carrier pre select or whatever BTW call it, and not LLU. Your ADSL may be LLU via Sky's former Easynet DSLAMs. You can usually tell from the traceroute, and also by checking the --vendor option on a broadcom router (the dslam chipset shows as Globespan).

You would also still connect using PPPoA even if you are connected to one of their new MSANs if you are using a router that hasn't been updated with firmware supporting MER, apparently they've recently started to roll new firmware out for the Netgear DG834GT, and the new firmware for the Netgear DG934G is still to be rolled out by sky. You'd also be on PPPoA if you were on Sky connect.

Right That clears a few things up TBH i always thought my line was full llu till a few week ago when i rung the post office up about switching my line rental to them and they said it appears you've got a BTw based line so that makes it easy to switch you, That was a shock to me as the line has never been BT Sky requested the new line fitting hence me thinking i was full LLU but they said at the post office possibly skys own phone hardware was full at the time so they put me on wholesale line, Also about the broadband i think it dose connect to easynet if i trace route i get easy-net as my first hop (ive also got a sagemcom N router)

Would PPPoA be the reason they told me my line could not use the gaming profile mode then ?

PPPoA or MER wouldn't make any odds to your line configuration. If you are on one of the former Easynet DSLAMS then I gather the line profile was far more configurable, and would have been accessed on a different system to their SVBN. Maybe the support guy, isn't allowed access to that system.

In a tracert on the old easynet network, the gateway (2nd hop) shows up as something along the lines of xxx.YourBTexchangename.uk.easynet.net

Yea possibly its all irrelevant now anyway im switching providers next month so them putting me on BTw / easynet instead of SVBN has worked out in my favor big time lol
