Sky 80/20 Product Rumour

Hi,

Just seen this on skyuser.co.uk:


Connection speeds of upto 80/20
£30 per month

I was hoping that sky would launch a faster fibre product before my exchange is enabled to compete with BT, however with BT at £26 and the rumour saying sky would be £30 I'm not convinced that i'll stay with Sky.

The £20 sky product at 2Mbps upload isn't significantly better than ADSL2+ and £30 is too expensive.

I understand with sky's unlimited policy they need to cover costs but it would be good to have something for those who don't download TB's each month.

The £7.50 for 18Mbps down 1Mbps up I get at present is looking like a better deal.

All FTTC looks less attractive download speed wise if you can get above 10 Meg at present, those who jump at the chance at often those with sub 4 Meg speeds. The desire to pay more lessens for each Meg of extra speed someone has now.

You should tell Openreach that, they appear to not consider it a factor.

If I was on 18Mbps for £7.50 I wouldn't even give fibre a second thought! That's great value.

The 80/20 product's rumoured price is completely uncompetitive against BT's offering. BT's 80/20 for £26 even damages the Sky £20 40/2 product's competitiveness.

A much stronger line up would be: £20=40/10, £25=80/20.

As has been noted, my current line is good, but i'd still consider a 40/10 product if it was priced right (ie £17.50-£20)

I feel the majority of customers are being asked to pay more to allow sky to keep their unlimited product which only benefits a few.

my lines good too but sky seems to be doing an "elite" type service. i'll gladly pay 30 a month if i can get that package.

Well if you have to prove your speeds for adverts then what do people expect.

Hmm. I've got Retentions due to call me in a week or so to complete my sign up to FTTC, rather than switch to BT - I think I'll see if I can get the 80/20 service from her..

bear in mind your adsl2+ sync speed is unusually high, its way above the typical.

whilst typical FTTC speeds will be way higher than adsl2+ probably at least 4x as high maybe even 5x as high.

also burst speed isnt free and the higher usage it allows and you can maybe see reasons why for the price difference.

In terms of the £26 vs £30 thats pretty much nothing of a difference.

you basically asking sky to copy the rest of the market, as it stands they alone now, they the only isp who are even attempting to offer true unlimited unshaped FTTC. You are spoilt for choice yet the people who want unlimited and unshaped are not.

I think with some profile options made available, it would be worth £40 per month for a truly unlimited unthrottled FTTC 80/20 connection . no point in having big sync speeds if you are unable to use them when you want or need to,

Sky have gone back to the old BT method of charging more for a faster speed when in fact its data transit that costs.

The BT Openreach cost differential for a 40/2Mbps vs 40/10Mbps is pence per month and between 80/20Mbps is about £3. I won't use much more than I do now with 18/1 (ADSL2) and so whilst ill pay more for fibre there is a limit to how much more its worth paying.

With regard to the whole market being available to me and sky being the exception I disagree. Cheap fibre gets you about 20GB. 100GB packages cost more than BT/Sky/Talktalk and so aren't really worth considering.

Agreed. I used to be on circa 7.5mb which was good enough for me. Then i moved a few hundred mtrs down the road and dropped to circa 3mb which is too slow.

Trying to get fibre installed by either Sky or BT is prooving to be a RPITA!!!!
