Already on FTTC and move to Sky - anyone been through this

Hi

Im on fibre with Plusnet and thinking of moving to Sky fibre.

Anyone been through this and can tell me how it went?

Obviously I already have the BTO modem fitted and working, so presume its all done at the exchange, but will this cause any issues?

Will a MAC still work on a FTTC migration?

Any advice appreciated before I make my final decision.

Sky, being a Full LLU ISP, don't accept/use MACs.

Not sure how that works with FTTC but imagine it's the phone being LLU'd that determines it.

The MAC is for the broadband service tho, not the phone, isn't it?

Not quite! The MAC is for transferring the BB on a unchanging BTw phone line. Going to Sky transforms the phone line from BTw to a Sky non-BTw one, hence the LLU.

Just an update to this.

A MAC was provided by Plusnet and accepted by Sky without any issues, so seams as the process is exactly the same as per a copper connection.

Will update as the change takes place.

Moved from Plusnet to SKY recently , no major issues and to be fair to SKY they managed everything so it all went according plan without a hitch. Phone line & FTTC with Plusnet to Phone & FTTC with SKY. Requested a MAC from Plusnet but SKY didn't need it. SKY sent their own router and instructions, I already have the Openreach Modem. Phone line changed without any issue . I was without broadband for a couple of days but was warned this would happen, plugged the SKY router in on the day advised and hey presto everything worked. Speed up/down is roughly same as Plusnet but much more consistant and with a lower ping.I have an IP Camera which needed resetting and my no ip account updating as the IP adress on SKY is not static. Only other tweak required was to an old email adress to route it through the SKY email system but instructions for that are on line. I have devolo mains adapters throughout the house and can watch streamed HD anywhere.Service from SKY at the moment is the best its ever been and after two months I am 100% satisfied with the deal I agreed and service provided.Hope this helps.

Sky's IP addresses on fibre are "sticky" and rarely change.

I've had the same IP address for the last 7 or 8 months now and even got the same IP address back after an hour long power cut. The lease had probably just renewed before the power went off and returned before the IP address was returned to the pool.

Mind you it's rumoured Sky will be offering fixed IP address sometime probably to appease former Be customer that had static IP addresses before the Sky buyout.
