Outage in North Wales. Any ETA on fix?

Hi,
There's a service loss in North Wales which is affecting voice and broadband between Rhyl and Llandudno (and maybe other areas too). The service status page only says that it was reported yesterday at 13:30.
Does anyone here know more about it?

There is an update at 14.30hrs today.


"Update 6th December, 14:30pm

We understand that some customers in the north of Wales are currently without their Sky Broadband and Talk service. This is due to fibre damage caused by the inclement weather in the region. Engineers cannot currently access the fibre to carry out repairs due to flooding. We are working with Openreach to investigate the possibility of setting up fibre on an alternative route to restore service to affected customers.

We will post updates as they become available. We apologise for any inconvenience caused and hope to have service restored as soon as possible."

It doesn't fill you with much confidence that a single fibre fault can wipe out the voice and broadband service of customers on 14 separate telephone exchanges over a large geographical area.

If you scroll down the below link there are services offering help and advice regarding the flooding, although neither Sky or Openreach are listed.

But that is normally an advantage of fibre, it can and does carry so many connections equivalent to many pairs of copper!

Hence if it does go down, many more users will be affected.

I agree, however my main point and concern was how Sky seem to have set up their exchange backhaul, in a way that one fibre break can cause such a huge and complete loss of service across the North Wales coast. Obviously there are no alternate fibres or backup microwave links. Says a lot for BTs network really. As reported in the Daily Post, Sky are the only telco affected by the floods.

If you are prepared to pay for the resilience rather than relying on a single fibre a single fault won't wipe out service in the same way, ( not all exchanges can have resilience). It is noticable that BT and Talktalk were not affected in the same way so we can assume they have resilience.

The fibre should work under water but if it breaks it's difficult to work on till the water goes down.

Update 6th December, 23:00pm

Openreach will commence building building an alternative fibre path at 09:00 on the 7th of December to re-route the traffic and restore service. We will continue to provide updates as soon as they are available.

Good job I have good connection on my mobile phone, or I'd be stuck!

It is finally up and running again now. Looking at the router WAN uptime it seems it came back on around midnight.
