I am due to go live on Sky FTTP on the 8th January and I don't particularly want to use the Sky hub.
My Asus RT-AC68u supports MER / DHCP option 61.
Do you still need to use the MAC off the Sky Hub on FTTP?

No. You don't have to use any Mac on Sky, on FTTC and FTTP.
You just need to use a generic Sky username and password in the DHCP Option 61 field.
I don't think Sky have ever required copying Mac address from their Hub.

Great stuff, thanks.

They did a long time ago, things became more slack once they acquired o2/BE broadband and users arrived with extra demands. You had to extract your username/password from their hub in the past, and then clone the MAC, as Sky would only allow specific MAC addresses to connect to their network. If you bought a hub on say ebay, it would work, but it could take upto 2 hours for the system to effectively go "ok, it's a sky hub and it's now on this account."
Was all a bit silly.

I joined Sky from Plusnet in October.
I use my own router (Edgerouter X) and Openreach Modem (Huawei HG612) and had to Wireshark the username and password from the supplied Sky equipment. The username was [email protected] - which was the MAC of the equipment.
This was useful in my case.
It does seem like there's variability in what is offered currently in terms of authentication. Certainly in my case when I researched I found differing experiences. I had to wait until I received the equipment to understand what I'd need to do.

If the connection is via an Openreach HG612 it must be FTTC

If the connection is via an Openreach HG612 it must be FTTC I was thinking exactly the same, just wanted the poster to confirm as this thread was about Sky FTTP

You didn't have to do that.
You can just use a generic username and password now.

Not even sure if that's needed now, I was sending a generic string in option61 but I just tried removing that and I still got an IP after restarting the router.
Three possibilities here
1) openwrt sends something in opt61 out the box
2) because my MAC is already learnt somewhere it let it though without the opt 61 param
3) Sky have finally dropped the requirement for opt61 and it's just standard DHCP now.
This was with an HH5 running openwrt on a NowTV FTTC line.

Option61 is still needed, I guess before it must have been due to the previous session still being up or some such.

Worked for me.
Took literally 20 seconds and I had an IP and everything burst into life.

No there is absolutely zero requirement to extract username and password from the device. The only requirement is for option 61.
Generally sky agents beyond a certain level, if you reach them, will recommend
Generic Username And Password
[email protected]|password
This will work any custom router that supports DHCP option 61 (MER).

Not sure if that was a reply to my post but I was enquiring as to the modems suitability on G.Fast

Best as in wifi 6 or are you not bothered about that?

Best as in wifi 6 or are you not bothered about that? As I said best then I really should say yes to wifi 6 but to be honest something that supports DHCP Option 61 and can easily handle say 300/50 FTTP

I'd probably get an Asus RT-AX86U or RT-AX58U and put Merlin firmware on it (as easy as a normal F/W update) and Merlin F/W has option 61

I'd probably get an Asus RT-AX86U or RT-AX58U and put Merlin firmware on it Thanks, was very tempted until I read they would probably be superseded very quickly because of wifi 6E. Looking at these routers has made me decide that I will be buying an ASUS router in the near future
|

The AX86U and AX58U only came out last year and I'd guess IMHO they will be supported for a few years yet, especially by Merlin. I think Asus only had the GT-AXE11000 on pre order recently, so you are looking probably the end of the year before anything 6e at a lower price point and depending upon the chipset whether Merlin will support them.
Unless your WiFi channels are very congested with neighbours on 5GHz in my opinion there won't be much benefit to WiFi 6e in the near future and obviously you actually need a few clients with 6e to make any benefit.
Depending upon the size of your property and co-channel interference from neighbours a well configured WiFi 5 network, maybe with some additional APs if large can often give a better result.

OK, Thanks for share that info

Out the box Asus's do not support MER / Option 61 so yeah, you need to flash them with Merlin or similar.
My RT-AC68u which is getting on a bit now sits on 5Ghz CH100 and I generally get around 600Mbps over wifi upstairs. Pretty good really.
As Sky do not offer anything faster than 150 at the moment, i'll keep the RT-AC68u for a bit longer. Should they offer 900Mbps then i'll go with the Asus RT-AX86.
I have been using Asus routers for years and have personally found them to be incredibly stable and far better than the stuff the ISP's give you.
