Sky Fibre with Internet calls

[link to this post]

Been looking at the prices on Sky site and notice they have a £200 buyout option which is not the £300 my supplier want but I would take the hit to get the full fibre 900 speed.

Is anyone using their Internet Calls package. After some research I see they have a Gigafast+ router with a phone port. Is it easy to setup? I have a couple of Panasonic Dect base stations and trying to think of a way to get the two base stations hooked up to Internet Calls, maybe a splitter?

How is the 900 services I have my own router but it doesn't have a phone port (Asus RT-AC68U) and to be honest needs replacing as software support has ended but the mesh with another 2 x AC68U works well.

Any comments welcome.

Phone socket on the router is a blessing and a curse. It means you must use the Sky router, I have the SR204, and to be fair, it's been rock solid.

The digital phone provision is all hidden / pre-setup. You have no access to those settings, so you need to use your old analogue phones. I'm using my Panasonic KX-TG8561E DECT base station connected to the Sky router, everything works as expected, including DDI on incoming calls.

Just remember, any internet connection problems knock your phone out too, obviously.

Also, for my mother-in-law, earlier last year I had her broadband switch to FTTP as copper was ending 'soon', and I purchased a Siemens Gigaset C570 Premium VoIP Phone. It has a DECT capability in it's base station.

This allowed me to set up an independent VOIP service, which costs £1.44/m, plus calls at 1p/min. After looking at her typical usage, there was no point paying the monthly flat fee. I ported her original phone number in too.

The only issue is, DDI does not work via the DECT non-Gigaset handsets, they just have basic calling (with phone phonebook), nothing more.

The Gigaset handset supports all the fancy functions, or you can log on to the base unit via a web interface to configure.

Whoever your ISP is when you have FTTP installed, it is my recommendation (and other geeks on this site) to use an independent VoIP supplier in conjunction with a wireless base station.

The base station simply pugs into a port of the supplied router. Or you can have the VoIP service as a softphone on your mobile. If you don't know how set it all up, then companies like Voipfone will do all the leg work for you. An independent Digital Voice provider will almost certainly have cheaper call rates then from the offering from Sky.

Do you need two base stations to get coverage, or could you add a panny extension base?
Our panny phones are so old I forget if they where brought as a pair, or the extension was added later.

Interesting I will look into that. Current thinking is getting a Voice Reinjection Faceplate Kit from Run-IT Direct and having one base station downstairs where the router/VOIP port is and the other on extension wiring upstairs. Might not be with sky.
