Using BT1800HG do I need to buy an ADSL2+ modem?

I'm currently using a BT1800HG. As I'm on a rural exchange it will never get unbundled and due to my line distance from the exchange the maximum speed I will get is 4Mbps (currently on 1Mbps with Pipex).

Hi,

With regards to your BT speed checker results (up to 4 meg), these are based on the service being provided to you being the BT MaxDSL wholesale product.

At present, if you migrate to Talktalk, you will only be migrated across on the speed that you currently have with your ISP at the moment, in your case 1 meg. Talktalk are looking in to providing the MaxDSL product for speeds up to 8 meg, however they have had issues which need resolving before they take it any further.

So, if you wanted free broadband with faster speeds than you currently have without waiting for them to supply the MaxDSL product then your best bet would be to arrange a speed upgrade with Pipex to 2 meg, if possible, and then migrate to Talktalk who would put you on the same speed as you have with Pipex.

BT products do not use ADSL2+, however if your exchange was ever unbundled you would find that most LLU services have plans to use ADSL2+. So, no, you don't need to purchase their ADSL2+ modem as long as you're not on their LLU connection and BT decides not to change their network overnight.

I've got a second telephone line witch isn't currently ADSL enabled (not on split pair, if that makes sense), if I use that number will it enable me to get around speed restriction issue? Then once the service is up and running I can just cancel the ADSL on my Pipex line?

Unfortunately, I've not had any experience of a brand new connection on Talktalk to be able to know what speed they connect you at initially. However, if anyone else reading this knows then please feel free to comment. Other than that the only thing I can suggest is to contact Customer Services, although I don't think they really know either.

With regards to your 2nd line not being on a split pair, I'll explain what this is.

If you look at telephone wire (not extension cables that plug in to and run from the socket), you should see that you have pairs of wires twisted around each other. This is done because each wire in the pair then cancels out the others electromagnetic interference.

A split pair is when one wire is used from one twisted pair and a second wire is used from another twisted pair. This then leads to what is known as crosstalk, a form of interference. For telepone lines and especially ADSL it is important not to use split pairs and any telephone line installer/engineer should be well aware of this. Although, having worked for a cable company years ago, this was not always the case!

The same principle also applies to networking computers over a wired LAN.

Im a new customer and recently moved from Naims.co.uk to TalkTalk due to their free broadband (for

Talk Talk arent using ADSL2+ at present so no big rush, they are still either using BT Wholesale ADSL services, or just their LLU ADSL service

To answer your question, yes the BT 1800HG works fine on ADSL Max lines.
