Talk Talk LLU, Netgear DG814, No Connection

[link to this post]

I have been with TalkTalk for a few months now, and asides from the fact that (a) they swapped me onto their servers without telling me and (b) my modem never came, all have been fine.

Last Wednesday, the local exchange (Leeds) was unbundled for TalkTalk (or so they tell me), and our connection was switched over. I've not been able to use broadband since - I'm writing this through my phone.

I use a Netgear DG814 router. It's showing that the line is working:

ADSL Firmware Version 3.9.122
Modem Status Connected
Connect Mode Interleaved Mode
Down Stream 8128 Kb/s
Up Stream 448 Kb/s
VPI 0
VCI 38

I've tried setting the MTU to 1400, using alternate DNS, and re-entering my user name and password. I can't use the 'standard' modem, as it was never sent. Didn't bother me at the time as I didn't really plan to use it.

TalkTalk (after trying to fob me off by saying the router was probably broken) have called an engineer, but there is a one week wait just to have somebody call back (as their minimum). Leaving would be no quicker, as now that I've been unbundled the process for going back to BT/ADSL would be pretty drawn-out too. I work from home quite often.

Any suggestions for what I can do. I must say, I've not often been this unimpressed with the service a company has provided.

The data you give is what you'd expect for a DslMax connection - certainly not LLU.

Have you been on DslMax all along?

The latest firmware for the DG814 is 4.10. Your version looks a bit "ancient".

Hi, its look like you are in sync and can get an adsl connection. Is the i light on the adsl router on solid green? if it does try:

1, log on using ur tt username and password, go to router status and see if you get an IP address.
2, try logging in using [email protected] password as blank/nothing. go to router status and see if the router gets an iP address in adsl bit.

if that doesnt work try:

3, log on using bt_test@startup_domain , password as blank/nothing. and see if you get an IP address.

Please report back.

Also please call CS on 0870 444 1820 and ask for a modem to be sent, as we will not be able to provide support without a TT modem, as indicated in T&Cs when you signed up.

Thanks for the help.

I've updated my firmware to the current version, and tried each of the three log-ins suggested.

I don't get an ip address with any of the suggested usernames. The green light on the router is solid green though - suggesting the link is up and stable...

When I check details of the PPPoA connection I see the following:

Connection Time 00:00:00
Connecting to server Failed
PPP LCP negotiation ---
Authentication ---
Getting IP addresses ---

and on the WAN port details I get this:

WAN Port
MAC Address 00:09:5B:30:4C:1D
IP Address 0.0.0.0
DHCP None
IP Subnet Mask 0.0.0.0

I'll call and ask for the modem too.

I'm confused about whether I'm on LLU, ADSLMax or anything else now. I had been with Virgin.net at 512Kb, and was always under the impression the line would only support something up to 2Mb. The Down Stream of 8128 Kb/s the router is showing is fast.

If you have ever changed your talk talk password it may be worth switching around and trying the older passwords

- Can you confirm that the "green light" that's always ON is the 3rd light down (or from the left) .. the one that looks like a fancy "i"?

- When you login to the router, can you check the "Multiplexing" method that's selected. It should be "VC-BASED". If it says "LLC-BASED", change it and click "Apply".

- Ring TT on 08700 875562 to confirm that your username/password haven't "changed"!

The fact that the router is reporting a "448" upstream connection sync suggests that you're on DslMax. If you were on LLU I think the upstream sync is 766.

ok looks like there my be issues as looks liek you are in sync with the i light solid green, as you cant log on with the bt_test username. It could be you are on the LLU, as TT has not yet offically launch DSL max, its still on trial to selected customers.

You will def need the TT modem as we cant go ahead without a TT modem, even though you are using a better equipment the netgear router.

Once you get the TT modem, try again with the test logins and see do you connect.

also explained what you done so far, ie done the test logins and used an alternative router, this will save time if we need to log to BT or Opal for LLU.

As the OP has been with TT "for a few months" already, and still hasn't got a TT modem (perhaps he opted not to have one!) it doesn't look like he's going to receive one anytime soon, and it seems a shame if he has to invest in one now, just to talk to someone in India who's reading from a crib-sheet. I can't see any resolution there, but I'm open to correction.

Presumably the DG814 is "up to the job" of dealing with LLU and/or DslMax? Is anyone else using this router with TT? Do any of the experts here know?

I know for a fact that TT migrate customers from a DslMax service to their own DslMax. But I agree it would be "strange" if they arbitrarily decided to upgrade a customer from 2MB to DslMax.

The netgear dg834 is able to support dslmax no problems, as its just ordinary adsl but without limits, ie, noise limits limiting the speed using IPstream products

If he has been with TT for a few months and the he did pay for a conenction fee of
