Line drops and no auto reconnect

[link to this post]

Hi,

I've got 2 friends with a TalkTalk connection that have the same problem but live 100 miles apart from each other. Both seem to have a fixed 2 meg profile (that doesn't bother them). Both have a DLINK G624T wireless router with current firmware. Both suffer from line drops and the router cannot automatically reconnect - even a power off and on sometimes doesn't reconnect them.

Any thoughts....

Cheers

Post their stats attenuation, sync speed and noise margin.

Can only get to one of them at the moment

Item Downstream Upstream Unit
SNR Margin 27 30 dB
Line Attenuation 23 13 dB
Data Rate 2272 288 kbps

and on the BT master socket

BT master socket
SNR Margin 25 29 dB
Line Attenuation 23 12 dB
Data Rate 2272 288 kbps

That looks like ADSL via BT wholesale with plenty of spare margin. Are the sync drops coming at the same time every day or at random?

Same time == interference on line look for culprit noise source.
Random == fault with line or modem. Substitute modem or report fault to TT CS.

I would invest in a Speedtouch 330 USB modem for TT support purposes. They are very cheap on eBay.

Also check TT service status page for on going known faults.

As etee said, try using another modem/router (preferablyone that talktalk supply) if you give them a call they may send you one out for free.

It could be the router which is at fault or internal wiring. If you can rule this out as a possiblity it needs reporting to talktalk. The charge talktalk told you about is reasonable if the fault is down to your own fault and not caused by talktalks equipment.

The BT engineer who comes out will be bringing his own modem and will sync up at 2 Megs. If he can see the frequent disconnections, he should be able to fix his own equipment. This is a better scenario for getting a BT engineer out than to deal with a LLU line.

Bit surprising both of your friends have got the same problem though unless there is a common fault with the D-Link. Have you read up on the AR7 bug?
