TalkTalk broadband via LLU suddenly OK

[link to this post]

I just thought I'd give TalkTalk a pat on the back rather than a slagging.

I switched to TalkTalk in late August 2007 on an LLU exchange, having been with them for line rental & calls for some years. Previously on Pipex broadband 1mb (too far away for 2mb they said...) who were quite good but the service inexplicably went off for hours at a time now and then. I'm quite a way from the exchange, probably 4 to 5km. I've used a Netgear DG834PN wireless ADSL router before and after the switch to TalkTalk.

After getting TalkTalk up and running on LLU, it varied from around 3mb to 4mb speed, occasionally being throttled to 1mb when I had been doing quite a lot of download activity during the day. I now do any big downloads overnight and the speed has stayed around 4mb.

The service still kept going away for an hour or two at a time every few weeks, sometimes for half a day. I never got to the bottom of it. As well as the phone & ADSL running thorough a ADSLnation filtered socket, I had a ringer plugged into the master socket by the front door. I decided to put a fly-lead type ADSL filter on that as well. Also round about this time, I got an unsolicited call from TalkTalk saying that they were doing a software upgrade on the exchange - didn't make a note of when - drat! :-)

In the following weeks, the service went off once or twice. However, I've just noticed from my router logs that the line came up at 4mb on 19-Jan-2008 at around 21:45 and amazingly it's been up ever since, uninterrupted. That's around 3 weeks. Credit where credit's due.

Good to hear its all going well if you speak to TalkTalks second line support, they may be able to increase your speed further by decreasing your SNR margin.
